Why so few 16.5" bbl's

If 16.5" is the optimum barrel length for a .22lr, is there a detriment to longer?

I've just received my new KIDD 18" barrel, so I'm wondering if I had it cut and crowned to 16.5" would there be any perceivable difference? Any downside other than my wallet taking another hit?

I doubt you'll find anyone willing to cut it. It must be "manufactured" shorter than 18.5 to be legal. Altering one below that is considered a no no.

Thanks for the replies. I guess the two gunshops i buy from were both incorrect about the legal barrel lengths in telling me i could not install a 16" KIDD barrel on my Ruger 10/22.

I did try the Federal web site and it was being redone, did not allow seeing the info at the time.
Perhaps i will phone the BC Firearms officer myself to be sure.
 
there is zero need to phone to confirm. a 16 inch barrel on almost any stock available for you 10/22 will be of legal length. Even a 8" barrel in most fixed stocks still makes the legal length, I know because I have a few 8" shortys. If you want a 16 inch you will be fine as long as it is manufactured at 16"
 
Never ask gun stores for advice on anything. They are possibly the worst place to get firearms info from. Recently I was told by one store that LAR-15 mags are legal to own but illegal to put in a rifle, another store proclaimed that .223 Rem is a military cartridge and theres a shortage cause theyre shipping it all to Afghanistan. LMAO
 
So I bought a dlask 16 inch barrel and have no stock or trigger group at the moment, so I've had plenty of time to clean and look at the barrel and somethin has me a little worried. when I look inside the barrel about 3 inches down it looks like, well i dunno how to describe it, like a few black spots or "pitting" or something inside. Now i've cleaned this thing thoroughly with wipeout and a boresnake, so there should be nothing in there. guess I'm not really asking a question, just sharing my concerns i suppose. As long as she shoots under an inch @ 50 yards I'll be happy.

This was done with a Kidd 18" barrel @ 50yards.

My 16" 452 American is a tack driver at 50, at 100, and as far out as my range will go ~225. I was going 5 for 5 on the smaller side of a red brick at 220 last time I had her out.

I have this great little Marlin 989-M1 from 1965 that was made to look like an M1 & has an 18" barrel - shoots ridiculously accurate. Almost makes shooting boring - lol.
