M14 Barrel Vice

This will be making an aperance @ the Hungry/M14 Doctor Clinic

Well, I couldn't justify spending over $100 on one. I asked a buddy at work about making one up at work out of steel. Finding out it was quite hard to do that he suggested I make one out of oak. So after this weekend he shows up with this :D
It is 2" thick, and 5x5" square. Anyone got a vice to try this out on???

In my opinion it won't work. It may work putting a barrel on but taking one off is a whole other kettle of fish.

Looking at your buddy's design. Does the upper half of the oak vise grip the shoulder of the barrel? It will need to in order to distribute the load and not twist in the vise. I can't really see from your pics.

No it doesn't. I made it like that as I had seen some homemade ones done the same way but in steel. I will try it tmw and see if all is ok.
