Most popular Hornady .308 A-Max bullet??

I started out with the 208 Amax for my Nemesis, great ogive but now, i did devellop a load with 178 gr Amax and from 600 to 800 metres my groups are really staying tighter, i guess the 178 is here for good... JP.

168 and 178 are very popular. The 208 is also gaining popularity.

The 178 is best for long range work. Most are either shooting the 175 SMK or the 178 AMAX. Most will also say don't bother with 168's as the 170+ bullets can do everything they can do and more. This is true.

168 bullets are still popular because most LEO are still using them and a lot of people don't like change. This is where the 168 AMAX comes in. It is an improved 168 SMK. The 168 AMAX performs similarly to the 175 SMK because of it's improved design.

If you want the details a quick search of “168 SMK vs 168 AMAX” on the internet will give you days of reading.

178 A-Max for standard calibers
208 A-Max for magnums

One thing to point out:

Hornady advertises thier BC higher than the Berger 210VLD.

I have consistantly had more drop from The AMax's.
Both loads I have been shooting average within 20fps of each other. The AMax bieng the faster.
Both loads shoot close to 1/2MOA on a good still day.
Both loads point of impact is within 1/8" at 100yards. Talk about convienient!
With the scope adjusted for 1500 yards & (210bergers), the 208 A-Max's hit 5 clicks lower at the same distance. 1.25MOA. Interesting eh?!

The differennces seem to become apparent at approximately 1300 yards.

Having both loads so perfectly matched out that far is awsome! I have never seen it happen before with any of my rifles. Have any of you gunnutz experienced these things?

Could you PM me your ballistic data by chance? I will put it in bulletflight and crunch numbers. I haven't had my 110BA out very often compared to you. ;)

I would say 155 by far. Palma/TR rules require 155s, and TR shooters generally burn through a MINIMUM of 1,000 per year.

OP asked about AMAX bullets. The 155 AMAX's do not really compare favorably to the the other manufactures 155's. I do not think an AMAX would be a good choice if a person planned on pursuing 155 gr bullets.

Tell that to some of the World Class Palma/TR shooters I know who use 155 AMAX bullets for training and competition.

30BAR:

The BC always seems to be a bit "optimistic"! Lol!
All in the name of SALES, not FACT.

Who knows, maybe the BC down where the bullets are manufactured is higher. Lol!

All I know is, my impact points dont aggree with the info they supply. It is resonably close though out to 1200-1300.

Maybe there is just too many variables to cover for them to be able to calculate an accurate BC for such a wide variety of areas these bullets will be used.
