Hi guys,

I got a new AR off the EE, but it has no sights, no front and no rear. However it does have a quad rail and its a flat top. I went to my local gun shop today and asked about mouting sights. The guy without seeing it said if I have a quad rail I may not be able to mount magpul BUIS or anything like because the quad rail might be lower than the upper receiver rail. Also my gas block is NOT railed either.

After inpsecting the rifle it looks like the quad rail is EVER so slightly lower than the upper rail.. Is it true I cant put ironsights on this gun? I would buy a red dot or something, but they are currently out of my price range, and I really want to shoot this gun!

Thanks.

what shop told you that? I would seriously think about never going back there again.

BUIS are made especially for quad rails, the ever so slight difference can easily made up by raising or lowering your front sight post.

Some buis have elevation adjustment so you should be fine. I cant remember if the magpul front has elevation or not. LMT buis are set up with rear elevation and windage and theyre easy to work with.
Cheers!

Its not ideal but it really is not an issue. That is unless your rail is so far off it is impossible to zero the sights, but I serouisly doubt it.

The mbus are adjustable as are all front sights. If you own or are contemplating a front sight that doesn't adjust you need to seek some advice. You can't zero irons properly if the front is fixed.

exactly.

Even if the quad rail is a few thou lower than the flat top receiver rail, it shouldn't matter as the front sight will need to be lower anyways in order to zero for POA=POI (point of aim = point of impact). But all AR15 sights should be able to zero for height with the front sight anyways.

It was reliable gun... Hmm weird, they usually seem to know their stuff.

There are a VERY select few (almost universally older) rails that were completely symmetrical, left/right, up/down. The top rails on those older rails would not line up directly with the receiver rail, and were mainly for A2 type rifles or carbines.

However almost ALL modern day rails now are designed to line up with the receivers rail and provide a continuous rail along the top.

I guess having no elevation travel in either front or rear would make zeroing a challenge! hehe

Precisely. The majority of folding rear sights and a lot of the fixed rear sights have no elevation adjustments. The reality is, if you're running irons you aren't shooting past 200.

wait, so my quad rail is probably old? I noticed looking at it from the side, the quad rail is VERY slightly lower, almost unnoticeable. Maybe its just me, but the side rails and upper/lower rails on the quad all seem the same.

I dunno if you guys can tell from this pic or not..

There is nothing wrong with your rail, unless the height difference is more than 1/4 inch just slap on a set of BUIS and go put some holes on paper.

Nope. here is the perimeters for buying gun parts from Brownells.

1. Total has to be less then $100.00
2. company has to be approved for export.
3. No Barrels, Receivers, frames.
