So one of my favorite hunting spots was a man made lake. It was created back in the 40s or 50s to supply mines with water.

Now it also happens to be my favorite fishing spot as well. And they don't stock the lake either.

If I go there and don't see at least a single Moose, then that is rare.

I just found out the Government plans to destroy the Earthen damn and return the lake back into a creek.

I just can't understand how they can just up and do that to something that has become a habitat for Wildlife.

It was habitat for wildlife before they made the dam that made the lake, and now it's habitat for wildlife, and after they remove the dam and the lake drains and leaves a creek, it will still be habitat for wildlife. I sympathise, but you can adapt. As the wildlife did, and will again.

The moose will adapt but I'm sure the large trout in that lake won't adapt too well :(

I know how you feel. I hunted an area for whitetails which was about 5 miles square for 20 years. It was rolling hardwoods hills with spruce nad fir thickets in the lowland areas. No roads and if I ever met someone in there they were lost. It was crown land and when the gypsy moth out break occurred, they put roads through and cut the whole area to 'save' the wood before it died. But the moth didn't eat hardwoods so it wouldn't have been worth cutting otherwise.

All we have is the memories but like they say at least we had it for a while.

On the news I guess they are reporting that the BC government is doing this to ALL man made lakes in the province? I guess Greenwood or whatever that town is called was offered $50,000 by the Government to save one of their man made lakes but from then on the town would be responsible for the upkeep and any future problems.

I doubt they would do it to all man-made lakes: Carpenter, Williston, Ootsa/Whitesail....and then of course there is the planned Site C.

I meant lakes that were created for supplying water to mines or whatever, they aren't being upkept by the government and don't have uses anymore. I wish they'd do it to Ootsa, my family could finally get their land back.... :p

After that old unmaintained dam burst and swamped Oliver I guess they felt compelled to do that.

At least they are not turning it into a tailings pond for a mine.

They weren't stocked? The big ones will adapt by becoming food, and as a species, they'll just be succeeded by trout that don't grow as large.

I understand your sense of loss.

Can you get some beavers in there?

Without the lake the stream before was nothing more than a trickle so my grandfather told me, so I doubt any fish will survive sadly.

There are about 1200 dams in BC, many of them not maintained. burrowing animals can lead to piping which can lead to a major failure. After a dam failed and caused havoc the Province assessed all of the dams and ordered repairs on many of them. The orphan dams were reviewed and ones deem hazardous to human health are slated for removal. Just wait till they decide to remove Powell lake one day....

theres a lot of popular trout fishing lakes in the kamloops area that are man made i dought they will do away with any ,, this is big revenue to the govnt,, but i have seen stupider things dont by the b,c, govnt ,wade

They may not be stocking the lake any longer but they had to at some point to get Lake Trout in a waterbody that was originally a creek. Obviously the trout were able to reproduce in there. Shame to lose that I agree. I think the Gov't could use the money for something better than removing a lake, man made or otherwise.
