First things first, a huge thanks to Gary at Wanstalls for helping me with this magnificent shotgun. Disclaimer here is that I was not paid or endorsed to do this review but of my own free will. Now for my review of the Mossberg 590A1 SPX 9-shot...

It costs me $849.99 after taxes and shipping and took 2 days to ship (because it's from BC to BC locations).

The Good (Pros)
-All metal trigger housing
-LPA Italy Ghost rear sights and front fibre optic red sights (not sure if they really are made in Italy or Italian style)
-Pumping this shotgun is rock solid in feeling
-Handgrip feels solid until reaching the stock (see Cons)
-Ported barrel supposed to give better recoil reduction
-Not even close to as many flaws like an 870 Express does. Quality control is VERY high with this shotgun.
-Built to be low maintenance but with a drawback (Cons disassembly)
-Typical Mossberg engineering, the shooting hand can manipulate the trigger, safety and the pump release. The pump release is not as easy to access on a Remington 870
-Believe it or not, I like the fact it doesn't come with a speed feed stock (personal)
-Ambidextrous for left or right handed user
-Rails uptop for mounting an Aimpoint or an Eotech if you so please

The Bad (Cons)
-It's heavy (but I don't care)
-Bayonet is not very sturdy when mounted on the shotgun
-Needs to be greased when you get first get it
-The welds that are on the barrel seems sloppy (not sure if it's a brass braze or aluminum) not terrible or noticible but you can clearly tell from my pics
-The action you really need to pull back
-Disassembly, you require brain cells and its a good thing youtube was invented. Thankfully you don't need to do this very often
-The stock is hollow but shouldn't bother most shotgun users. It's thicker walled compared to the flimsy 870 Express
-The shell elevator is cut out in the middle (see picture) but shouldn't effect your shells at all (I keep thinking it'll fall out)
-Needs to be greased the moment you get it. The action is not very smooth and could use some oiling up

The Ugly
-Accessories are not as abundant and easily found compared to an 870
-Really wished that it can eat 3 1/2 shells
-Did I mention what a nightmare the disassembly is? I'll elaborate seeing that I saw the youtube vid. You need to take out the trigger housing in order to get to the rest of the parts. Judging by the video, this is slightly more complex than a 1911 takedown and requiring a 1/8 flat punch.

Overall
I really believe this shotgun is worth forking out the $850 for. While the latest craze is about getting 930's, a pump action shouldn't fail you in using target loads albeit not as fast as a semi-auto but reliability and quality is the huge factor in my determination of choice.

On with the pictures...

(This is the one reason why I hate ghost sights, I just can't see the rear sights with a camera!)

OP you forgot the best part of the second picture.... Im shocked you didnt mention it...:eek::eek:

THE MOUSEPAD!?! :D:D:rockOn::D:D Love those things :D

LOL! Nice 590A1, Im also going to be joining the 590A1 family also, as the Remington Expresses Ive owned in the past were simply :puke::puke::puke:

Nice gun.

I wanted a 590A1 Tactical but neither of the stores I deal with had them in stock and long backorder times. I also checked a lot of the online stores but my experience has been that most of them have completely wrong stock info.
One store had the 500 SPX Tactical in stock so I bought that. Love it.
Basically the same except: 18.5 barrel, 5+1, plastic trigger guard, ATI stock, no bayonet.
However, good welds on my 500 at the magtube and front sight, no weird tan "epoxy" look like those in your photo.

Not to appear like I am hijacking your thread, just posting some of the differences based on your pro/con list.

Pro comparison: Just over $500. Light even weight. Mine came pretty well lubed.
Con comparison: Short Magtube end space. Shell Holder sticks out. I find the action release lever difficult to get to and push.

I sometimes put my Aimpoint PRO on it. Gonna try my EOTech XPS2-Z on it. Unfortunately the sight setup won't co-witness with anything afaik.

*Edit* for gun#### of the 500 SPX... less tac light.

Whats with the "welds"?!?!?!

The 590A1 is designated more for the "Military-esque" appearance... while not overly pleasing, its not a massive issue in my mind... but to each their own... Im assuming that theyre potentially high-temp soldered on, hence the brownish/yellow hue... Ive only got 2 areas on my 18.5" compared to 3 on the 20" bbl, but again its a duty gun, so Im not fussy about looks, its meant to get beat up, thrown around etc... all name of the game :D

A slightly canted pict rail/rear ghost ring is far more of a :mad:ovrec:mad: in my opinion... screw you Remington! ...:D:mad:

Not too worried about the "looks" of them...nothing a good paint job cannot fix. More worried about a poorly/cheaply done job that will not last long or take any abuse!!!

Both my 500 SPX and the 590A1 SPX hi-res photo have smooth black welds...
I'd be lightly scraping to see what happens, or take it to a gunsmith.

In your bayonet photo #2 the welds look bubbly and uneven and the front sight weld doesn't even look like it is solid from one end to the other.

Dont need too, Ive already got my Associate of Occupational Studies Degree in this trade from the Colorado School of Trades :D...

The front sights and barrel retainment ring on these firearms are brazed on upon further inspection of mine (just got the thing about 45minutes ago)... simply to ease the manufacturing process over welding, there is nothing to worry about strength issues for these, unless there was a gross error at the factory... There are rumours about that there is also a style of epoxy also being used, still a method of attaching ghost rings, but I couldnt see Mossberg using them on the 590A1's, potentially on the 500's perhaps, but not the A1's...

The High Res photos from Mossberg have, and always will be cleaned up for consumer appeal... unfortunately when they deliver to the consumer... not so much :D

Congrats.

Yes, that photo you linked does show the same weld look.
Odd that my 500SPX has very clean smooth black welds and the 590 has that look.

Thank you! :D

Yes Im most certain its all about the ease of manufacturing, I have absolutely no worries about any "strength" issues with anything on these 590A1's... incredible quality over any 870 Ive ever owned... hands down!!!

Now I just have to find the time to stop sitting in front of the computer typing about it and start dumping some rounds through it :D:shotgun::shotgun::shotgun:

Ive got an SPX delivered back in 2008, will take a look at my welds and see what they look like. I dont recall looking at them and being the least bit concerned.

Hey OP... you like the length of pull on that peice? My little T-rex arms were too short for it and i got a Hogue reduced LOP stock. Really helped the handling and because it brought the weight closer to my body it seems less muzzle heavy when loaded...

Congrats on the gun, mine is smooth as silk after a couple thousand rounds and has never had a single problem.

I have relatively longer arms so longer firearms never really bothered me like the SKS etc. I completely forgot about one thing to add, the trigger pull must be 4lb compared to an 870's 3lb?

I've seen another 590A1 SPX before mine and it has the same brass welds/brazing? on it. This is very normal compared to the company picture that has been photoshopped much like a ####star/supermodel on a magazine/web page.

As Grad C. Nixon has said.... it's time to dump some rounds at the range.

I posted these in the tactical shotty pic thread, but I'll crosspost 'em here too. Here's my 590A1 model #51663. Pretty solid shotgun. I don't plan on adding anything to it besides a sling.

Just got mine in the mail from Gary as well. Couldn't have asked for a better experience.
Mine is identical to yours(in terms of the welds) but I love this thing. Looks and feels amazing, definitely glad I sold my super nova and bought this one.

I had an SPX as well, three things i didnt like about it.

1) the weight ( not a biggie but you could hammer a post into the ground with it)

2) the front sight, its welded, so if it breaks or gets bent at all, there is no way to change it, without some gunsmithing. Also, when in the bush it would get snagged on something now and then.

3) i couldnt find a heat shield for it, i was told because of the thick walled barrel you cant get one for it.

So i bought a regular 590 with bead sight and heat shield, just as awesome of a gun, and i have a knoxx recoil reducing stock on the way for it.

I definitely recommend watching in HD and full screen on the above video.

All this 590A1 talk is making me want one again. I thought I had suppressed those emotional needs for such a sweet shotgun. :D
