My first SKS... (More pics further down with XCR magazine conversion).

The wood stock was just too saturated with cosmoline to bother with. Even if I did somehow get it all out (I spent hours at it) the stock wasn't in great condition anyway. Totally not worth it.

So I bought this Choate Dragunov stock on the EE. Cut a bayonette slot with a dremel. Removed cheek rest so I can use the iron sites. Will replace cheek rest when I scope it.

I plan to put a Weaver Converta-Mount system on it to mount a scope...as soon as I can get to a store that sells those. Should be fairly easy to find. I'm hoping WSS would have it.

Anyway, here it is. 1954 Tula. Made by superior communist worker for purpose of shoot capitalist pig. Now is for shoot paper and old frying pan...

hey nice rifle if you dont want the stock ill take it i love cosmolin

Hmmm... Too soon... I'm not sure if I'm ready to part with it yet. Realistically, I'll probably never use it again, but it needs to sit in my closet for a year before I realize that I really don't need it...

That was fast. Glad you like the stock. :)

Yeah, I didn't waste any time getting it mounted!

I just need to drill a hole for the cleaning rod. It would be nice if I could figure out a place to put the cleaning kit, but that's a little tricky. MAYBE I could make a spot just in front of the butt plate where the spacers are, so I could drop the cleaning kit in vertically from the top. Not a high priority, and I won't do it unless I can make it look decent.

Anyway, I love it. I would have bought an SKS 20 years ago if I knew anything about them.

This gun came from Wanstalls.

I couldn't leave it alone. I converted it to use AR style magazines so that I can use the XCR 10 round pistol magazine (legal in Canada).

Hey, I like this. Where did you find the mags? Do you need an adapter? Do they feed reliably? I have a buddy with an SKS who might be interested in a setup like this if it works well.

Some people have commented that the mag doesn't work well at all because of the tapering of the 7.62X39 round...

That was probably me, and I think that is true to some extent, but I got it working with great difficulty!

Basically, you have to mill some material out of the receiver until the magazine fits, mill some material away from the bolt until it clears the magazine lips, and make a catch to hold the magazine in.

I'll make a little video to show what the guts look like.
