I am looking to get a new 1911 pistol, and like the idea of the Canadian made Dlask 1911's... but there seems to be little information on them.

Is there any first hand experience with ownership of Dlask 1911's? There seems to be only 1 or 2 on this board with good reviews (but way too short) and a couple nasty reviews (again, with no info)...

Can I get a tangable account of Dlask ownership and purchase experience?

And feel free to post what you have...

Thanks for the help.

I'm not affiliated with Dlask, but here's my thoughts...

I've dealt with Dlask for years and have had nothing but positive experiences. Whether it's his guns, or he's working on guns for me, Joe is a fantastic pistolsmith. I truly believe that if he were in the USA his guns would cost twice as much as what he's asking. It really is a shame (for him, not us) that he's more 'smith oriented and less into the business aspect (advertising, promotion etc) as you are correct, there's not a lot of info on him out there.

I've never seen his AR's so I can't comment, but right now I own one Dlask 1911, a Pro Plus model, and I own 3 other 1911's he's tweaked and everything he touches is top notch.

And not to toot my own horn but I'm not one of those guys who bases my opinions on a relative comparison to the closes Norinco model. My Pro Plus is sitting next to a Wilson Combat CQB, a Kimber Super Match, and a pair of full tilt Detonics Scoremasters, and I'd say it shoots as well and locks up as tight as any of them, but for $1500 less. (I'll post a pic when I get back from my cabin for proof).

And FYI he'll make you a truly custom gun although his website doesn't say much on the issue. He can do stainless frames and slides, tactical rails, custom lettering/marking/serial numbers, comps, mounts, bull barrels, anything you can think of, in 9mm, 10mm, 40s&w, 45, 400 corbon (you get the picture).

So go ahead, buy Canadian!

Thanks for the input Mopar, and I look forward to your pictures... that goes for anyone out there that has one. Did he ever make the lefty 1911 other than the prototype stuff I have seen on some US blog sites?

This is why I am having difficulty deciding if I want to get a Dlask or not... just not a lot of info (no offence Mopar... would like to have a few people come forward with info/experience)

I had Joe do up my Norinco several years ago. The only thing he kept was the frame and slide. The gun is and has been an outstanding shooter. IMHO he is one od the best 1911 gun plumbers in Canada and ranks with any in the US. If I was in the market for another 1911 I wouldn't hesitate to order one from him.

Take Care

Bob

Joe's fit, and finish is impeccable. He is very open to your input, and a pleasure to deal with.
Like most good smiths, he is very busy. This makes your gun come later than you want, but it is worth it.

Joe himself is top notch. Had him put a Lilja barrel on my AR and de-Larry a series 80 (long story) Anyway he must of been away when I had an issue with one of his race guns. I sent it to his shop on Annacis Island, got it back and the gun went full auto. 8 rounds of 45 acp in less than 2 seconds:eek: Anyway sent it back no charge. When I got it back, the hammer dropped as the slide went forward, f^^ck. I called his shop and got my answer, he was in Europe during the time the gun was in his shop, hence the helper monkey statement. I traded the gun for a STI Targetmaster. I would only buy his 1911 if only HE made it. YMMV.

Joe does great work and stands by his products. If something doesn't work he'll do his best to fix it (often for free). His prices are pretty good too!

Although his website sucks, it is best to call the shop and discuss what you would want done. They do answer e-mails, but not that consistently.

He does use Caspian frames as his 1911 blanks.

Very serious about having Joe do a custom 9mm 1911. BUT, all the pics I have seen of his work well they just look like Norcs. I am after a gun that shoots great and looks great to. I have not handled one myself so I am looking for input as to the finish on these. Please dont bad mouth me or turn this into something it's not fellas just a simple question. Everything on CGN lately goes into rant fests.

Either those are bad pics or I'd have to agree with you.....kinda Norinco looking. Hard to tell for sure if you're not seeing it in person tho....so I'd give them the benefit of the doubt until I held one and made an in person evaluation.

As a person who has both bought, and lusted after the stuff Dlask makes I will say this;
If Joe was in the US, he could charge a lot more for what he provides.
He would still be as swamped trying to keep up.

His 1911's are definetly not at all like Norks. The quality, and tightness of his machining rivals the best for the price, and better. I especially like the finish on the serrations. Flawless.

I do plan on commissioning a custom 1911 for Joe. I believe they might become collectible one day. They certainly are limited.
Drop in after calling first one day. They have several parts on display.
I guarantee you won't be disapointed.
