Can you hunt deer with a MINI-30 in Nova Scotia

What does it say in your hunting regulations? I don't see why not as long as the round is not FMJ or a tracer round. Expanding soft point you should be good to go.

Another CGNer reported great success with his SKS in NS. I took a deer with a 30-30 in NS, as I'm sure thousands of others have. 762x39mm isn't far off that.

Short answer:
Yes, it's legal with soft points.

I am sure it can be done, I have taken multiple with a 30-30 i was just wondering if it was legal. I wish the .223 round was legal to hunt deer with in NS, TBH

Legal
Firearms/Bows/Crossbows
and Ammunition
Big Game
1. During the general seasons for hunting deer , moose, and
bear , holders of appropriate licences may use:
• a rifle and ammunition of .23 calibre or greater;
• a shotgun of .410, 28, 20, 16, 12, 10 gauge, using
a single projectile; or buckshot having a diameter of
6.10 mm (.24 in,) or larger .

I checked the regulations just be to sure, and this is copied and pasted from the 2011 regulations.

There was talk that the DNR was going to allow .223 for Deer here. I heard this rumor last year, but haven't heard or read anything since about it.

You are good to go with a Mini14 in 762X39 with Soft Point ammo,... unless there is a change from all previous years, and that would be reflected in your 2012 condensed regulations booklet, you get with your Deer license.

Although I agree in the hands of a skilled hunter .223 could drop a NS deer without issue, there are way too many bad shooters who can't get clean kills with the larger calibres let alone letting them trying it with .223.

yes, but maybe if they shot a smaller caliber, lower recoil gun, maybe their shooting would have scalpel precision, and not dull knife precision.........60gr partitions should be more than enough to drop one in .223 rem.

I think this very doable at your typical NS hunting distances. I'll put the exclusion to whitetail deer only. I don't think its wise to try this with black bear or the huntable moose population in the Cape Breton Highlands and expect the same results from a .223 calibre rifle.

My friends have property in Nova Scotia and told me the minimum caliber for deer was .240 so he uses a. 243 when hunting there. We tried to get out there last year, but timings didn't work out - I was going to use a .308, meets the standard and it's something I have available.
