LOP drama - Ruger M77 Hawkeye 7.62x39

Got a Ruger M77 Compact in 7.62x39 (16.5" bbl, side safety) several months ago. I absolutely love the gun, but the LOP on the stock is brutal! (I'm 5'11")

I have tried a rubber slip-on butt cuff, but it is too large for the small compact stock, and basically flops around. Also, it only adds ~1" to the LOP.

I'm looking at adding an additional 2" of LOP

Solution's I see are:

1) Stock extensions (preferable for me, but where would I find them for this model, and new longer screws to secure them?)

2) A whole new "adult male" sized stock (any ideas of where to look?)

3) A quality leather butt cuff (probably not ideal for adding this much LOP)

Any ideas?
 
Maybe your first mistake was in buying a rifle marketed with the term "Compact" in it's name? :D

Joking aside...

Consider taking it to a gunsmith... they might have some stock extension ideas or perhaps they can mod another stock for your rifle.
 
If you are at all handy with woodworking you can remove the butplate
and use it as a template to trace out spacers from whatever thicknessess of plywood you need.
For a 2" increase use 3/4" +1/2"+ 3/4" plywood spacers.
Cut them slightly bigger than the template so that after being laminated together,
they can be sanded down to a perfect fit.
Fill in any voids in the plywood edges with "Plastic Wood" before painting.
When drilling the pilot holes for the spacer, offset them so the original screws don't end up over top of these. Countersink holes.
Screwing the spacers on in stages(plys) will avoid having to use too long of screws.
Just don't foget to offset the screw holes.
Install the original butplate.

Agree! But I am a sucker for short barreled rifles and shotguns. Thought I could live with the short LOP, but the last couple months have taught me otherwise.

I am going to go with this idea, seems like a solid, inexpensive fix. Will report back with results!

I agree with this solution. Pick something nice, maybe even some buffalo horn - that would look amazing !

Boyd's Stocks has a 10 percent off coupon till July 4th and they make several stocks for the M77 MkII.
Till then try turning adjusting your body position so your chest is more square to the target.
 
Use the old shotgunner trick...

Rest the butt of your rifle on the crook of your arm and the trigger is supposed to come about halfway up your index finger when the finger points straight up.

What Supercub is trying to say is your stock is only 1 inch shorter then Std.
He's wondering if you are super long?
Do you have many rifles? If so are they all too short for you? Are you a giant?
Have you tried squaring your body/shoulders a bit more to the target?

I am a regular dude. Not a samsquantch. I am saying an additional 2" because I have a slip on buttcuff that is currently adding 1" LOP, and it is woefully insufficient.

I do not know if 2" will be the end state, if that's what you're trying to get at. The plywood stock spacers will allow me to mockup to see what will work, then add or subtract.

As for body position in prone, I could not be more squared off. My shoulders are perpendicular to the barrel of the rifle.

Basically the same as this guy....

Your best bet is to sell it, then buy a full size rifle that fits you like a glove.
Go shop and try several makes and models until you find one that fits you best.

I'm only 6'1-2" and I like 14-14.5 inches in rifles that kick.

A rifle with the recoil of a 7.62x39 I could probably shoot with a 10 " LOP though.

It's more about the length of your arms and neck than your height, my rifles need scopes that I can mount as far forward as possible, big head, long neck, 36.5" sleeve on a dress shirt.
