Axis haters beware.

I just bought one off of Scot MacDonalds "Rifle Clearance Sale" in .243.
I plan on following Savages bbl break in procedure along with the 111 I bought in .300WM I bought the same day.
From what I viewed on Youtube on the Axis/Edge rifles these entry level rifles are darn accurate. For the $310 price I paid I could'nt refuse. I vote we keep this thread going with Axis owners pics of groups and mods ;)
 
I don't know. My axis 223 does not seem to shoot so good. I think I have 1 group out of 20 or so that shot under 1 inch at 100.I can usually get it under 1.5" but this is not good enough for a varmint rifle IMO. I only paid $250 for the combo from Wholesale sports when it was on sale after christmas. For what I paid it is a fantastic gun. My only dislikes were the trigger which I replaced and the bolt lift that jambs my thumb into the scope if I'm not careful. I'm more than happy to throw more money at it to make it shoot better, but I think that I may have a bit of a dud?! Great gun to get my wife into shooting. very cheap to reload also.

Glad to hear yours shoots so well. Hopefully I sort mine out also.

There have been lots of threads over the years extolling the virtues of rifles less than $5K with lots of positive feedback from the members here. The Savages, Stevens, Marlins, & Tradex are just a few to mention.

I think the "new member to CGN" was being figuratively speaking and not mouthing off or claiming to be an expert.
Buy what you can afford to buy and what you can afford to shoot.
just cause one drives a Ferrari or a Porsche doesnt make one a Race Car Driver...
And yes pictures do help some guys comprehend the project ;)

I epoxied two 2219 aluminium arrow shafts into my savage forend to stiffen it up...lighter than steel.

+ 2 for the 788, my old girl in 22-250 that I packed around for 30 years and didn't even own a cleaning kit, still shoots as good as my newer savage. I think the gun was $67.00 off the shelf and another $20.00 for the weaver scope.
 
Who cares what it costs,if the guy likes it so be it.Unless you want to give him a $5000 rifle,it's none of your business.

You see this is where things get really muddy. I own a factory Remington 700 Varmint in .308 built in 2005.........right now it's barely a 1 MOA shooter @300 meters. (load development continues) I have good optics and solid rings/bases on top of it, the older HS Precision stock as well. Also, maybe it's kind of unfair to compare heavy barrel rifles to those of sporter profile?

Just to be clear, I know that there are a lot better rifles out there. But I think of most of my guns as tools. Sometimes you need a snap-on, but for my purposes, this princess auto special works just fine. ;)
 
Axis are just fine.

I am having great success with my Savage Axis in 30-06. The factory setup is very nice. I would have like to have the Savage Accu-Trigger in it, but there is a company that makes a trigger replacement for it.
The Axis line will make a ton of money for Savage. They are functional, good quality and everyone who wants a reasonable rifle can afford one.
Just wait until the fine people at Ruger start shipping their Ruger American bolt action rifle. In all the common calibers of course: U$369.00. Another great deal. And by the way, the Ruger American and the Savage Axis rifles are designed and built in the USA using US parts. None of that Chi-com junk!

Absolutely not true. For example, you will find a lot of love for the Stevens 200, as it is inexpensive, and easily upgradeable over time. I think the reason people don't dig the axis is that there just isn't much aftermarket for them!

Still...how much better does it SHOOT tho? I'd rather the cheaper costing but good performance rifle be the one that gets dropped/get dinged/lose/fall into the lake, ect. With a total cost including a scope and taxes being under $500 I can live with it if something happens.

I don't know about other people, but myself I do not purchase a hunting rifle/scope on the pretense that some day I'm going to lose it.

Me either...but depending on how much you hunt or often you pack a gun its gonna get damaged. I have quite a few friends who have lost expensive guns out of the back of trucks dropped in the woods as it wasn't tied properly onto an ATV, left learning against a tree...go camo!!! :p or dropped into a lake. It happens.
