My m305 shorty stupid problem today.

Hi, everyone. I am totally new to M305/m14 shooting.
Today, I brought my m305 shorty to the range and experienced some serious problems.

I did strip and oil the gun following Youtube video and was shooting the
CanadaAmmo Norinco 7.62x51mm.

My first shot, there was thick smoke coming out of the gas tube (I guess. Please forgive my terrible terminology). And the gun did not reload the next round.
So I manually ejected the spent shell. Second round, same thing happend except the thick smoke. After I manually ejected the shell, the third round went off but I could NOT move the op rod back to open the action and eject the shell.
When I got home, I tried to fieldstrip the M305 shorty, but the op rod can not go back since the bolt assembly stick to its place after I removed the stock and the trigger group.

Please help. Thank you very much.

Note: There are three rounds missing from the ammo box; there were three holes (quite nice group:p) on the target. So I am 99.9% sure that the thing in the chamber right now is just a empty shell.

The thick smoke is probably oil burning off.

Apply pressure to the charging handle and at the same time smack the butt on the ground to free the stuck case

Gun must still have some packing grease or something in it

Updates: I did it. I did not smack the butt. Instead, I shaked the handle in high frequency, and the empty shell came out after about 10 seconds worth of shaking.

Then, the question remains. Why did the gun failed to eject the shell at the first place? Now I actually have a bolt action semi-automatic rifle.
 
Borrowed from the M14 guru Hungry... Apply GREASE to:

Bolt lugs,
Bolt raceways,
hammer nose and face (take out your trigger group and examine the wear points...grease there)
Op rod race way,
Op rod track
Op rod hump interfacing with bolt roller on right / starboard lug
Op rod guide (figure 8 thingy under the barrel)
Op rod

Also CLP the usual points, but keep the gas bit dry. Youtube and the stickies/M14.ca are your friend :)

Thank you guys. I lightly oiled the gas piston and stuff. So it is better to keep them dry then.

The spindle valve(gas shut off valve) is at ON position (vertical). Does it suppose to be like that? No modification has been done to the gun.
 
Sounds like the gas system burned up that oil and the op rod did not go back to full battery, so it could not pick up the next round. Clean all that stuff up really well (probably a fair bit of carbon in there now) and keep it dry, should be fine. These guns are a breeze to take apart, it was my first rifle and I figured it out myself pretty easy as a total noob. I didn't realize the gas system could be shut off and thought mine was broken until I turned it again on a whim. :)

And don't grease the gas system either, nice and dry, and if I recall correctly vertical is on. you will see how the holes line up when you disassemble it to clean it.
 
Yes, keep the gas system very dry. Have you checked to see if the gas ports are aligned??? That will make a huge difference in weather it will cycle or not.
To check, strip your rifle down and leave on just the gas block, piston out. Then take a flashlight and look into the hole under the gas block to see if there lines up with the one in the barrel. If there not you will need to shim the gas system or unitize it, shimming being the easier one to do.

Piston , cylinder and gas plug are to be kept dry. Grease the areas mentioned earlier with cheap white lithium grease from crappy tire .
The spindle valve is to be in the verticle position , it was designed to be turned to horizontal position to fire grenades :eek: .

OK. Thanks a lot. I guess the line up of that little hole (gas port) is off based on visual inspection. That could be the problem.
I may have to shim the gas system or unitize it. Is there a shim kit or things alike on sale some where?
I will check the previous information on this topic as well.

I want to keep this rifle. It looks cool, shoots accurate with open sight, and seems toughly built(without much precision though).
 
For the shims kits, see Hungry here on CGN. He sells them, I just bought 4 kits from him a couple of weeks ago. Your going to need to take off your flash hider to make that happen too. A dremel will be your friend for the task. It took me all of 15 mins to get mine off. See this post

I agree with all of the above except the dremel part :eek: .
All you need is castle nut pliers, allen key, a good punch and a big hammer...
I have removed about 10 like this without any damage to the flash hider or rifle.

Get to one of Hungrys clinics !!! Great experiance and you will learn alot .

Oops, I forgot about the castle nut pliers.

Yes, that method will work too but there is a slight chance that you might break the flash hider that way.
