Anybody do the M&P9 Mag modification?

On youtube there is a very good video showing how to modify the S&W M&P9 magazine to make it easier to accept 10 rounds and make it easier to load the mag into the handgun. Has any CGN members done this mod?
I am wondering what the trimming of the follower will accomplish?
Why not trim the spring only?
If anybody has experience with this mod and could fill me in on the results I'd appreciate it.

New mags with the gray follower have a new design. Cuting the follower down will let you load 10rounds easier and you can make a reload with a full magazine, with one round still in the chamber. Otherwise it will be hard ro seat and will eventually drop out after the first shot. IPSC shooter know what I'm talking about. ;)
 
Yeah, filing down the follower makes it easier to seat the mag on a closed slide when you have a full 10 rounds loaded. Without the mod, it can be damn near impossible to seat it properly -- you have to smack it REALLY hard. I did all my mags just before doing my Black Badge course and was VERY happy I did -- made the weekend run much smoother.
 
I'm not a fan of chopping springs, and followers are dirt cheap, so I elected to trim and file my followers, made a big difference...still not a fan of thumb loading these mags though(...because of the shape of the follower?), the Uplula is excellent, if it was to break I would be sad.
 
It's not the spring that's too long or strong. It's the new grey follower with the "9" that's too long. It's longer than th original follower. S&W redesigned the follower so it is virtually impossible to load 11 rds into a 10 rd mag for liability reasons in case someone did load in 11 rds. Trimming the bottom of the follower to the:p same length of the original follower will make it easier to load 10 rds.
 
If you load up to 10 rnds and put them aside for two or 3 weeks the springs break-in and there is no longer an issue.....

Why anybody would bubba a mag when there is such a simple solution boggles the mind!

I have approx 20k down the pipe of one of my M&P 9's. I have 16 mags. Not a single one has been butchered in any way.

Personally, when I'm done a range session I load all my mags up and store them that way until the next time they are used. Yes I have an upula mag loader, but it has been forgotten on the bench on more that one occasion. Once you use a mag a couple of dozen times it is much easier to use. All of my mags are no trouble to load with my thumbs.

Modifying the follower is the best solution. Who'd leave mags loaded for 2 or 3 weeks? The longest my mags stay loaded is maybe 2 days. But then again I actually shoot my guns.........
The new followers are the problem, old ones didn't have this issue. The new ones actually bottom out on the floorplate so leaving them loaded won't help.

Loading a mag and leaving it won't weaken a spring. It doesn't work that way. Your simple solution doesn't work, period. Do your car spring wear out by just sitting there. Nope!. Springs don't work that way. Loading and unloading will wear out a spring but just leaving them loaded won't. Filing down the follower is the only way you can get the mags to hold ten rounds with ease.

I have done the mod and I found it to solve the issue. The issue which is caused by the follower, not a tight spring

Absolutely right. If you don't cut the follower, you'll need to "whack" the mag to get it seated properly (and quickly). Doing that will on occasion (20% of the time in my experience) cause a very slight breach movement, and that in turn will cause a light strike on the first trigger pull after the mag change. The end result is that the gun won't fire, and you'll need to rack the slide to chamber a fresh round.

If you're a competitive shooter, you can either do the "operation" on the mag followers, or lose 2 seconds on mag changes and screw up your courses of fire, your choice...:p
