Slam-fire

Today at the range I got many slam-fire (3 time with 2 rounds burst on a series of 30 rounds)with new XCR-L. The rifle is set on 4 for the breaking period.

I reload my munition:
cci 400 SR
19gr of IMR-4198
55gr fmj

Should I change the primer brand ?
Or try No.41/5.56MM Military small rifle primer with NATO sensitivity ?
Or cci 450

I switched to CCI 450 for use with the SKS small primer remington brass, solved the slam fire issues I have had with one particular rifle. Can't hurt to try, I used these primers because it was what I had on hand and couldn't find a source for the milspec ones at the time.

If you can get the milspec they should work also...
 
I heard that cci 450 and 41 are thicker than cci400

I found this too,

Primer cup thickness:

CCI 400 - 0.020
CCI 41 - 0.025
CCI 450 - 0.025
CCI BR4 - 0.025
Fed 200 - 0.019
Fed 250 – 0.0225
Rem 7 ½ - 0.025
Win WSR - 0.021

Maybe the problem came from a bad pocket swagin job that cause bad seated primers.

Slam fire have been a 223 Rem issue since AR15's floating firing pin.
  • Use hard primers such as Remington 7 1/2 or CCI millitary spec primers.
  • Make sure that your primers are seating properly and don't protude.

There are many other thing that need to be done to safely reload for a semi automatic rifle.
My recommendation: buy Sierra's reloading manual and read the 18 page section on "Gas Gun Reloading" a couple of times.
It's an incredible resource of reloading information and should help you.

Slam fire in an xcr, chances are there's something funny going on and it has nothing to do with your primers. I'd say either something is jammed up in the firing pin channel (causing a true slamfire) or something wonky in your trigger group.
 
I also use cci. The thing that alarms me is that the xcr's firing pin is not floating, it is held back by a rather firm spring so for there to be a slam fire, there has to be something wrong
 
If you use BR-4 they are very hard, never got any slam fire with those and they make for a very accurate load... JP.

I agree. Also note the way his brass looks in the link I posted. Something is conspicuously wrong and it's not being addressed.

Please just focus on the issue, not the personal insults!!!
Keep those for the gun control crowd ;)

Did you get any slam fires with factory ammo?
If you get say 5-10% slam fires with reloads and none with factory ammo, then it's clear that you're problem is primer related (too soft or not seated properly).
If you're getting slam fires with factroy ammo then I would stop everything at once and have a good gunsmith have a look at it!

With my XCR I have noticed, it can occasionally slamfire when the gas setting is at 4.
It's happened once to me, once to my buddy.

I suggest trying to set your gas setting lower ( yes i know it's the break in period) and seeing if you get slam fires with factory ammo.

Any primer cratering or blown primers?

Is this with factory ammo?
Which ammo?
Are we talking about mil spec M193 or M855?

I've shot 1000s of rounds through mine and never got a slamfire. In fact, I've never had a slamfire in more than 25 years of shoothing black rifles (I did get a couple of punctured primers on some excellent ammo).

Finally, reloading for a semi is not the safest and best way to learn reloading...

I will try to set the gas port on 3, try factory ammo and put more attention on the brass. Maybe this problem came form a bad swagin technic.

PPU blue box - def not milspec or excellent ammo.
Fired two rounds and uh-oh. "that could have been a bad day"

I notice that the XCR has been known to lightly crater primers, but other than ppu, never had punctures.
