I have a silly question...

Before I start, I want to congratulate you on this new acquisition, this is indeed an awe-inspiring revolver.

My question is this though... although I readily admit these guns are awesome... what good is it for, apart from inspiring awe? I suppose this question applies for other very large revolvers like the 500 S&W too.

I've read somewhere that the .44 magnum is the largest calibre the average shooter can master (after training etc). Even then, (in the time where police used revolvers) it was deemed too powerful for police work (too slow to recover from each shot etc). So while I have no idea these giant revolvers will kill someone dead (and look very intimidating), they aren't the best for self defence... not that we are supposed to think about that in Canada ;)

I guess these large handguns can be used for hunting... except again, not in Canada.

I don't mean to criticize your choice - guns are a very personal thing after all, and again, it is *very* impressive. I just want to understand more about what the motivation is behind it.

cheers,

Why wouldn't you just load some stupidly hot 460 loads, isn't that why you would buy a 460 S&W?:p;)

A local indoor range won't allow .454 Casull, .460 S&W and .500 S&W. They do allow 45 Colt. They don't say what power level .
230gr FMJ's over 28grs H110. Good bang, nice flash. With the weight and the comp, the pistol barely moves.

Powderfinger61: if you can get some, try Ramshot Enforcer. It was made for the large magnums.

(E)

I do thank you for the compliment on my newest purchase, it is very inspiring to say the least.

As to your inquiry to why such a firearm....easy answers
1. Because I can...
2. I like to think Im a collector as well as a user....
3. Im a target shooter, shooting a handgun at 300 yrds is a hoot.
4. I reload my own, all part of the shooting hobby
5. I get to share my shooting experiences on CGN and at the range (want to shoot it?)
6. I do live in rural Alberta where the laws permit me to shoot wolves, coyotes, bears if they are deemed to be dangerous to myself or livestock. It will only take one round to make the threat cease.

Alberta Regs; Quote:
Access for Control of Livestock Predation
Black Bear and Coyote*
Any person who is (a) the owner or occupant of privately owned land, or (b) authorized to keep livestock on public land, or (c) a resident authorized by a person described in (a) or a resident authorized in writing by a person described in (b) may, without a licence, hunt (but not trap) black bear or coyote on such lands, at all times of the year.
Timber Wolf*
Any person who is (a) the owner or occupant of privately owned land, or (b) authorized to keep livestock on public land, or (c) a resident authorized by a person described in (a) or a resident authorized in writing by a person described in (b) may, without a licence and at all times of the year, hunt (but not trap) timber wolf on such lands, and on any lands within 8 km (5 mi.) of the above lands, provided he or she also has the right of access to these latter lands.

7. Giggle effect...it will put a smile on your face. (see video) lol

There are a lot of firearms that may seem impractical, but to the individual that purchases the firearm it all make sense.

Great looking peice of hardware, loved the video, that fireball is impressive to say the least. How many fps is that blasting lead down range at?

I have the 5" barrel 460 and absolutely love the ooo and aah factor, but 460S&W loads are costing me new tooth filling replacements on a regular basis.
Congrats on the piece!
