I inherited an old Lakefield Mossberg mark 2 repeater. I was cleaning it often, but found after maybe 25 shots, the barrel was filthy. Now I just give up and go gopher shooting anyway instead of cleaning it all the time. How many rounds do you guys usually shoot before cleaning? I have maybe 300 down the pipe since my last clean. Didn`t think 22 shells were that dirty. Compared to my 22-250 reloads, the 22 shells are a filthy shell.

You 'clean' you 22? Inconceivable. My 1945 Savage hardly gets cleaned, doesn't need it. The 10/22 hasn't been cleaned since I brought it home. I'll clean the Ruger when I pull it apart to mod the bolt release.

Mine does not get cleaned often. After a few thousand rounds you will probably have some lead or copper fouling that should be removed. Other than that pretty much only clean it if it gets rained on (bolt action) or if it starts jamming (handgun).

Every time they're used - but only a couple of patches to push the fouling out and then wipe the bolt and lugs. Relube the lugs immediately before it's used.

Mine goes 3-5000 between cleanings. I don't keep track. I hear sometimes they shoot better dirty, mine seems takes a few hundred to settle down.

your rifle will tell you when it needs cleaning- it won't feed, or the firing pin slows down, or it doesn't fire-

Every outing. An outing is usually 200-300 rounds. Not sure it needs it, but I enjoy cleaning bolt-actions. Too easy not too.

Reading this thread..I'm wondering if it's the Hoppe's "high" I might be addicted too..? :)

My game getter is cleaned when it starts shooting like crap cold bore, or after getting wet. The FVT will only be cleaned seasonally, between indoor and outdoor seasons.

I used to hardly ever clean them unless accuracy declined. Lately i have been cleaning the only gun i shoot at the moment after every outing. It seems to like a clean barrel and i enjoy cleaning it.
