good this we dont have really any big preditors around were i live! in fact i am seeing more deer this year then i did last, but the ticks seem to be really bad this year. the really sucks you only get 1 tag all year.
 
Can only shoot one deer this season in Manitoba...just like it was years ago and we all survived. Dropping the third week of gereral rifle is an ignorant and or uncalculated move IMO. Same number of rifle hunters will be out, just compacted into two week period... unless already tagged out in muzzel. Last week of the season was always best for me.

Archery should have been a seperate tag as well. Good percentage of archers hunt in GMA's where nor rifle hunting is allowed anyway. Just wish all the resource users were on the same page.
 
there were a couple of threads on this back in early may when the regs came out online.... one deer is ok with me. Like M12shooter said, we will survive... but I do think the DNR biologists had better get their heads out of their a*ses, and start game managing properly.
 
well at least your dnr/mnr is taking action now before your herd is in the shape ours is in nova scotia.our herd is at 20% or less than it was 15 years ago.our dnr still has not made ny major changes to our regulations.
 
the biologist have their heads out of their a--es.they are doing game management by cutting bag limit to one deer.they do their job and all the hunters start #####ing about only being allowed one deer.so hunt something else.you guys do have bears/moose/elk/grouse/yotes/wolves.start hunting some of the major predators.help your deer herd not hunt it into extinction.you also have mule deer.nova scotia only has the whitetail deer and black bears as big game that most of the hunting public can hunt.consider yourselves really lucky to have what you do.

Effective game management is only possible when every hunter abides by the same laws. That's not the case with these new regulations, they only affect licensed hunters, not Metis or First Nations. In other words, it's window dressing, which politicians excel at. :)
And we can't hunt mule deer, wrong province.
 
sort of like here in NS.natives have their own set of rules/regulations.still if all the hunters only harvest 1 whitetail as opposed to 3 like last year/or previous years,how many more deer are there going to be next year?the natives will harvest the same number as always,but if the non-native hunters harvest 1/3 of their normal number that is a lot of deer left to breed and reproduce.the dnr/mnr just have to enforce the new regulations,peoplewill still harvest 3 if they think they can get away with it.part of the reason our herd is in such poor shape.we do not have enough CO's to properly patrol/enforce regulations.even when something gets reported,by the time they show up the guys breaking the law are long gone.

There are very few that harvest a deer in all 3 seasons and while the number taken by natives may be the same, the amount taken by Metis is increasing substantially as it's a fairly new legislation and they are just beginning to take advantage of it in the last few years.

Anyhow, I don't want to turn this into a "racial" thread as those quickly derail. My point was that it's out of the biologists hands. We have areas in MB that have been closed to moose hunting for licensed hunters for decades and the population has not rebounded.

Another tool would be for MB Conservation to lift hunting restrictions on predators, namely coyote and wolf. Have a separate tag that costs $25 and is valid year round with no bag limit, at least for coyote. Most seem to hold wolves to a higher level for some reason, so I doubt we'll ever see unrestricted hunting of those.

Underfunded DNR is a whole different topic and one that exists North America wide. A start for us in MB( and Canada in general) would be to drop the British "General Revenue" system and have all income directed to the respective government departments that generated it. Sadly, this will never happen with our current social services in this province and country.

OK, rant off.........blood pressure rising. :D
