Ontario bear sightings

You can thank the good folks at the gov't and MNR for cancelling the spring bear hunt. Didn't you know, black bears are endangered in Ontario!

actually, you can thank the selfish nature of humans, our rapidly increasing population, and development that destroys habitat.

if you don't like the idea of bears roaming around, why live in bear country:confused:

All this coming from a guy living in Brantford!

In the case of Ontario bears... your points are dead wrong. The bear population in Ontario is rising... not falling. And in the case of the cancelled spring hunt, it has been shown to have been purely underhanded political dealing. The decision to cancel the spring hunt was NOT based on biological data... it was a knee jerk reaction to a threat made in an election year, by a Peta type (RS), to campaign against the Ontario Conservative party in key ridings, if the government did not cancel the hunt. The next day John Snobolen annouced the closure... and this was after weeks of town hall meetings and the ministry's own biologists indicated that Ontario black bears were in a healthy sustainable condition, and recommended that hunting oportunities be EXPANDED. So now instead of an economic boost due to hunting tourism, in many areas that could desperately use it, the citizens of Ontario are spending millions of their tax dollars to control the ever rising population of bears, not to mention increased crop damage, negative encroachment in towns and neighborhoods and increased automotive collisions. The Ontario bear situation is a study in politics at its worst.

Well said buddy!

I have seen five bears so far this year and none were at the hunt camp where I usually see the most. So I would say they are up everywhere but my hunt camp. We haven’t pulled any cards from the trail cams in the bush so I don’t know what they will show. We even had this little guy hanging around the transfer station, he would not leave no matter who was coming and going, finally the wife got bored and made me leave so I dint know how long he would stay.

Everyone in my area has also seen an increase in bears. The MNR doesn’t have enough money to react to any calls. If you do speak to someone in the MNR you get told to call the police as they have been told it’s not their problem anymore. So really that tells me bears are not big game animals anymore. We really need a spring season again to get the numbers down to a manageable level. Too bad the MNR can’t do their job with nuisance bears and also give us a season because there are too many bears.

I had one try to use my BBQ several weeks ago but he couldnt get it started. Cottage north end of Haliburton. Bear was relatively small 100-150 lbs but jet black, no brown at all. We see 1-5 bears every year in the back yard there. This is the first one I caught knocking over the BBQ. They never come up on the deck or real close to the cottage, so far no reason to kill one. All run away nicely apart from one a couple years ago that stayed put, squared off but eventually moved off. We saw one several years ago down at the lake on the beach, I'd estimate at least 400 lbs and on all fours was at least half the length of a 14.5 ft tin boat.
