Hevi Shot

I considered it but have a browning O/U and apparently browning doesn't recommend them in their back bored shoot guns. Seems the wad can cause some issues.

I used it a few years back and it worked well but it was expensive for the added range advantage it gave. Since I hunt over decoys range is less significant to me.

$4 a shot! I can buy a whole precooked chicken for $7

I had a box given to me and it did seem to kill like lead in 12ga but I've moved to a 10ga sxs and use steel BBs. I start lifting weights next week to be in shape to shoulder my sxs by opening day of goose season

With the high speed steel you can buy today it is not worth the cost. The steel will kill everything within range if you can do your part. I reloaded a lot of bismuth when steel 1st came out because it sucked but not now. Have tried the hevi shot just for the sake of doing it and yes it kills but not worth the cost per shell in my mind.

Now I really have no way of proving it but I have used a lot of it and seen it used and love it. if it fits within your budget id def recommend it. I did like the remingtion HD better though as far as steel alternatives.

The cost of the 'lead substitutes' is why I started reloading with ITX. It is listed as safe for older lead only barrels and chokes. Almost all of the other new ones (not including bismuth) are not rated for older barrels and chokes. I can reload a box for a lot less than buying premade. I can make the loads the way I want and can custom tune them for my buddies Winchester 1400 as well.

my opinion as a guide is to use the best shells your budget will allow. for the average fellow who might shoot 3 boxes a year i dont know why you wouldnt shoot hevi shot or the like. If you shoot a lot then for sure the steel alternatives are cost prohibitive. Of course every type of ammo has its limits and place and will "kill" but I dont believe that there is any argueing that the hevi type shotshells are more effective, so if you can afford em why not shoot them. Personally if I have anytime to waterfowl for myself i shoot hevishot but I dont drink or smoke and hunting and shooting are really my only hobby so I spend the extra. If you use blindside or any of the hypersteels with success thats great too.

For the waterfowl I mostly hunt here (Turres) it is still legal to use lead (thank the lord for small miracles). For jumpshooting black ducks I use hevi-shot or black cloud.

I have used some hevishot #6 in hand loads through my 16 ga Citori. I was amazed at the killing power. Pass shooting snow geese was no problem at 45-50 yds with modified choke. Dead in the air. I think the dense patterns of heavier than lead pellets do have some merit, but mostly I just call them in closer or sneak up a little more and use cheaper steel shells. I have also compared hevi shot with bismuth and it is clearly superior.

I used it this past season and found that I had less cripples over steel and over my hunting partners. When using steel I found that on passing shots I would hit the bird it would "wobble" in the air and take another shot to down it. Not so with Hevi Shot one shot one kill and clean was dead before it hit the ground. So in short I was using one Hevi for 2 steel. Now I also switched to Hevi Metal half way through the season and it is cheaper than say black cloud and still has half Hevi shot in the shell and it performed VERY well.

I say give it a try and make your own opinion on it.

Itx?

I hand load Nice Shot and Bismuth for my vintage guns, works great.
Cat

Hey Cat .... You got me going on Bismuth for the 16 bore .... I guess I'm hooked on loading shotshells for my SxS shotguns.

Wonder if you have ever used ITX? At $130. bottle its cheaper than Bismuth and importable from Ballistics Products.

Lucky :shotgun:

If it's from Ballistics products you still have to buy it from Will Bilozer.

When I used Heavi-shot...... (not that often with the cost) I was happy with the performace. I have also used heavi-steel and found it good as well, no real diff then any other quality steel shot.
