Has anyone else seen this movie: Battle of the Pacific, a 2011 Japanese production. It was interesting to get the Japanese perspective. Over all I thought it was very good with the exception of Daniel Baldwin who is a horrible actor. The Japanese actors were superb. I noticed that the Japanese troops had type 38's instead of the newer type 99's. During some of the battle scenes it was obvious to see that these longer bolt action rifles were a bit if a hindrance to the smaller framed Japanese soldiers. I wonder if Japan had mad an automatic carbine just for jungle fighting if that would have made a difference? That one fellow with all the tattoos was using a Thompson sub machine gun with good effect!

The Japs had an SMG using their 8mm Nambu bottlenecked pistol cartridge.

It was ugly as sin and didn't work very well.

They never did really get a handle on making an efficient, effectual SMG.

By the time they realised that such things were necessary in a jungle war, it was too late to begin designing, making, trials, adopting and then manufacturing and issuing the things.

Opportunity lost..... and yet they actually HAD all the German designs, courtesy of dear old Uncle Adolf and his Kriegsmarine!

Yep, the Type 100 submachine gun. Crudely made, welded whenever possible to speed up production. The bore was chromed to slow down corrosion, pretty useful in jungle climate.
