Help I'm hooked

I tried a friends BRNO 375 H&H - I love the thing. Now I want one but I've searched the net with no luck - any suggestions???

There was one on the EE a little while back, not sure it's still available. What you are looking for is a Brno model 602 in 375 H+H. The new CZs are nice but not the same as the old 602.

Thanks - I really like the single set trigger - I've had suggestions to look at the ruger 375 but I like the history of the H&H - besides that I've tried factory loads in it and thats what I know - I like that gun. Any comment on the ruger 375 in comparison?

The .375 Ruger will give you the same ballistics in a rifle that is minutely shorter, with an infinitesimally shorter bolt throw. It will weigh a bit less, it may cost less, since a shorter action is used, and it will distinguish itself by using ammo that is much more difficult to find. It will have absolutely none of the panache and style of the H&H.

The .375 Ruger is what the H&H woudl look like if the H&H was introduced today. Ballistically, the Ruger has a wee bit more case capacity so it's a bit higher velocity, but real world performance is very similar, sorta like comparing a 300WM with a 300WSM.

I had a Brno 602 in 375 H&H. Nice gun but way too big for a 374 H&H. Be better suited to a larger cartridge. I far prefer the Ruger- much handier more streamlined rifle.

If history is highly important to you with cartridge selection, the H&H has the history of other peoples hunting exploits........The Ruger is making history. ;)

Hi there. Not sure if this helps you much, I seen Lebarons has a Zastava Mauser 98 375 H&H Magnum along with a 458 WIN MAG. Sale on 20% right now. Looks like a nice gun.It is in the Baikal specials link on the site. Regards.

All true, esp the highlighted portion of the quote.

This is not mine, but I just fitted the stock and bottom metal to it (the stock around the front of the bottom metal has now been built up and shaped so the bottom metal sits flush). It is 10 times the rig the Ruger ever thought of being.

I love my 602. There are usually 1 or 2 on the EE to be had for reasonable prices.

I like them for the 6 round magazine capacity and the express sights. BRNO/CZ scope mounts also have that lug in the rear mount that seem to hold the rings and scope very securely.

I chopped my barrel to 20" and it makes a dandy carbine.

If you find it too heavy, then hit the gym!

375 Ruger is great

I had a BRNO 602 in 375 While living in South Africa (and also working for the South African NAtional parks for 7 years). Great calibre and rifle, but a very rough action. Hunted wildebeest, warthog, springbuck and one jackal with it. Very accurate for such a large rifle.

Today, being a reloader, and having access to the excellent Ruger bolt rifles (I own 22/77, 77MK11 VT, Hawkeye African, Compact Ruger Mag and a 458 Lott in the RSM configuration, Gunsite Scout), I can recommend these Ruger rifles to anybody. Smooth action (for a real 98 Mauser style rifle), good value for money and accurate enough as a hunting rifle.

The 375 Ruger is a great cartrigde if you want a short, handy rifle. In the 23" African or the shorter 20" Alaskan, this can be your one rifle does it all in America and Africa. It is not a tactical rifle, but then you can have a Ruger Gunsite Scout for that.

My next addition will be the Ruger Alaskan, also in 375 Ruger.

The magazine capacity in the old BRNO 602 and CZ 550 is more than the Ruger, but for hunting this is adequate. If you worked in Africa, and needed to cull buffalo or elephant (which ir urgently needed!!!), then a 5+1 mag could be a benefit. But then I suggest getting used to the reverse safety of the 602, or getting rid of it ! Obviously, ammo for the 375 H&H is very common, but is Africa the 375 Ruger is rapidly gaining momentum. Ammo here in Canada is cheaper for the Ruger.

Neither calibres will dissapoint you. Rather base your choise on the rifle / platform you wish to carry and use. Size does matter, especially after 10km of walking. I love my RSM in 458 Lott (very recent) but did not like the heavy RSM in 375 H&H, and rather selected a 375 Ruger Hawkeye African. ALso look at the new Winchester Alaskan (25"0 barrel, if you want to use open sights, need SS and Lam stock.

I bought a Browning A-bolt .375 H&H this year and I love it. At first I wasn't sure it was what I wanted. I wanted a Model 70 Safari Express but they were back ordered until next year. This being the 100th anniversary of that cartridge I had to buy it in 2012. So I went with the available gun. Shoots great, looks great and glad I bought it!
