UPDATE: Rossi Ranch Hand Mares Leg

To make sure I line up my drill holes to the berral I have to take the action a part.
So I might as well do the action job at the same time.
Just my luck I lost my punch so hope to get one in the morning
It hase com up one or two times on here but it is worth bing up one moor time, Steves Gunz DVD is well wort it
 
still havent got to work on the rossi but im going out after dinner to see if I can get a deer with my Chiappa ML 357mag will post pic wen i get a haida gwaii deer with the mare's leg
 
Mine just arrived. 44 mag. Cycles better then I had hoped, just a few scratches on the cartridges. I'm still gonna order Steves video and kit just to smooth it out a bit. Then a laserlyte laser sight and we're good to go!
 
For those looking for an aluminum case at a reasonable price, I bought one of these a few weeks back. It's a gambling chips case and is lockable for air-travel + it fits nice in a full size luggage case. Just take out the bottom chips holder and replace it with the bubble wrap bag the case came in. Gun fits very snuggly between top egg crate when case is closed.

In my case, I bought the 44 mag to pack where I cannot pack a larger gun, but want some level of bear protection. Hard cast 300 grain will be better than nothing. It is more of a peace of mind thing. I do not reload, so the 44 was the obvious choice.

Same as me. I use 240 grain factory soft points that I buy at the local Allied Hardware. Is it a known/proven/accepted fact that a 300 grain hard-cast cartridge is a better "emergency" stopper? There's more mass for sure, but it'll be going slower. I've never seen those cartridges in the usual stores.

FWIW, if I was really gonna risk my a** while fishing on a beary stretch of river I'm gonna trust my 600 grain Brenneke Black Magic swaged lead slugs. Try to imagine a small oil drum with a stabilizing tail. I've only got 15 ... which should be a lifetime supply :)

I think 240 semi wad cutter hard cast will work. Bullet barn sells them. I just like the hard cast. I want penetration with minimal expansion.

If the area is unpopulated , I pack a double barrled coach gun with challenger slugs. Our priorities and thought proccess seem similar.

Because factory 45-LC loads are only as powerful as 45-ACP, at twice the price.

44-Magnum is more powerful, more readily available, and cheaper, compared to 45-LC.

I guess to each his own. I see quite a few people on the thread have thrown a Boyd stock on, and that would make it easier to practice. I live in New Mexico so no can do, and travel up to the border to visit relatives in Nelson. The RH 45 is perfect for me with cross border travel and the ability to practice with milder loads. I've run some hot stuff through it, but really don't see the need to go beyond 255 SWC at 1100. I like the hardcast and soft for the trail, and even load up a few Sinterfire 155 HP as a discouragement round.

By the way, I know this forum is for Canadians....but I see a few aliens like myself have found you guys and gals more knowledgable on the subject of the mare's legs. I know it's a bureaucratic country as far as handguns, so this little gun has found a niche for itself up here.

Have you looked at the new Mossberg 464 spx or zmb? It's a novelty gun and gives us people in the States a chance to have a small scabbard rifle with the power of a 30-30. 32" long with the folding stock retracted and 36" all the way out.

Yeah i wanna open it up and smooth it out when i have the time, its chambered in 44 magnum. In my opinion it was 44 magnum or nothing if i want low power ill reload or use 44sp but i like pain :p

It's the only reason I own one. If I could pack a 454 casul handgun in the woods, I would, but the ranch hand is as portable as it gets for us. A lot of people have them up here and plan to pack them in the bush.
