Set The Record Straight with Transporting Ammo/Pistols Together

I overheard a discussion between three people at the range yesterday afternoon. I did not get involved. The debate was whether or not it was legal to transport ammunition in the same locked container that also contained one or more pistols that had trigger locks installed.

One guy showed up with an opaque plastic tool like box that was secured with a lock, he was carrying his ammo and two pistols inside the box that had trigger locks installed. His buddies (I think they were, at least?) were explaining it was not legal to transport in that manner. That the ammo had to be transported separately from the firearms. However, the ammo did not require a lock during transportation?

I was always under the impression someone could transport ammo in the same locked container as the firearm so long as the firearm was secured with a locking device, and the container holding the ammo was also locked. Maybe glad I never have. I carry a locked case with my pistols and a separate locked box with my ammo. Maybe over done, but would prefer to be safer than sorry given how open to interpretation our firearm laws are.

What is the right answer on this?

Pre-supposing your restricted firearm is correctly stored or locked for transport (unloaded, locked in a locked case in this instance); it's virtually impossible to have your ammo illegally stored or transported. Your ammunition can be "together with or seperate from". Is there any other place in the universe?

Yes, ask Ian Thompson.........

People like to make up their own rules/laws/regulations or hear-tell and pass them on as gospel. Do a little of your own research and transport your firearms/ammo to your comfort level while trying to comply with the law. If in doubt, consult a real lawyer.
Have fun, play safe.

Not necessarily, as the rules for storage and transportation are often different. They are just trying to keep us confused and make it easy for us to slip up. ;)

Storing ammo and a handgun in a gun vault or safe is perfectly OK. Transporting in a locked container is OK too as long as the handgun is trigger locked.

I normally transport seperately - pistol in a case, ammo in an ammo box, but half the time there's a loaded mag from the last trip to the range that I forgot about, either in the car or a pocket. Frankly I don't think about it much - let me re-phrase that, I don't care if it's all tickety or not, I have a better chance of winning the lottery than I do of that becoming an issue

can you point me somewhere i can see those quebec rules please?

point 19.1 du cours sur la loi 9
Pour transporter légalement vos armes à autorisation restreinte de votre résidence à votre club de tir, vous devez:

[...]

vous assurer que les munitions ne sont pas transportées dans la même valise que l'arme

[...]

I was under the understanding that gun laws were federal not provincial.

Using a smart play on words, Quebec's government managed to make gun laws using the wording "security in sports". So technically they are sport laws, not gun laws

As long as the gun is locked and unload...as well as the case storing it...its fine to have the ammo in there as well.

Kinda moot point. unless ur a total jerk and get hauled down to cop shop cop will never know what is in the box. ur hand gun needs to be locked and unloaded in opaque container with lock. if you get pulled over all u need to show the cop is your PAL, ATT, and certificate of firearms u are transporting. you would be committing an offence if he to ask you to open your locked box. perhaps quebec is different but that should be no surprise.

Nope; I got pulled over in a speed trap 3 cops and a supervisor. I was doing 15km over posted limit (as were the other 2 guys they pulled over). Cop asks "Where are you headed?"....A: range. :). {Cop} "so you have firearms in the car!!??" {you should have seen his eyes:)} A: Yep. {Cop} "Handguns!!??" A: You betcha:).
At that point he gets his supervisor who wanted to "see that they're safe and secure" "pop the trunk".
"No problem" I said. The super asked me to open my case {which wasn't pad locked but was latched} all guns triggerlocked and he was satisfied after ATT and RPAL, drivers lic ect were handed over. This is in Ontario, Regional Police.
I suppose he could have raised issue with the unlocked case, but he may have missed that fact with having to deal with some guy with multiples of handguns in the trunk of his car:D....I lock my cases now;)
