What are the conditions like for upland and waterfowl nesting this year?

DW is saying highest numbers ever for ducks yet a friend's son in Texas called a man from DW and he said that unless a lot more water comes along then the next few years are going to be bad for duck hunting. I am guessing he is refering to the US midwest area.

Is there a decent year expected for upland birds?

There will be plenty of waterfowl coming from the priaire pothole region this year. Delta and DU will agree on the numbers and there are no immediate signs of a decline.

Upland was good last year and there shouldn't be issues with nesting success so it should be good again or hopefully better.

Around here the water table is the highest it has been since they started keeping records. That tends to mean the lakes and ponds won't drain or dry out too quickly and the waterfowl should do well.

There hasn't been this many ducks since the 1970's. A record year. Upland birds are not plentiful, but there are pockets of huntable numbers, the bad winter / spring that upland birds weathered last year has yet to be recovered from.

Around my home area (80 miles east of Regina), every low spot has water and ducks. Lots of funny looking ducks (what we used to call sh!t ducks), Geese all over. Mud hens are plentiful, too.

A buddy and I took a tour from Grenfell to Yorkton, Canora, Buchanan, and back down to Grenfell this afternoon. Potholes everywhere!

**If you want a good bellyful of excellent food, stop at Raymond's in downtown Canora. Huge plate for $8.50. :D

I stood on top of my target berm yesterday and snapped this. I think even the ducks are getting sick of the water.

I went through the Humbolt/Lake Lanore are today. Water everywhere. One slough looks like it is 5x bigger than last year. They are doing lots of roadwork on the way into Humbolt. Several gravel roads looked like they have been rebuilt. Grain bins all over the place from the high winds.

ducks everywhere, tons of ducklings everywhere. Upland, not so much.
(around Swift current and south).

You a baymen?

Nope, just prefer working with them of the two. The difference can be night and day.

When I hear someone from the rock wants to argue with people on the other side of the country about whether their backyard is wet or not, I automatically think "townie".;) It isn't the sort of thing a bayman would do.

JFRY,

I was through there on the weekend to Med Hat and Lethbridge. That Chaplin area sure looks like a major duck factory. Lots of water everywhere.

I live in the WEYBURN area and like others every slough or pothole as well as the marsh 8 miles west of Weyburn has all kinds of swimming and flying critters in them !! As far as upland birds , was an easy winter around here , so the populations should be good , with lots of hunting areas, Goodwater, Colgate, Lake Alma, Radville, Trossachs , Khedive & Pangman areas
