Hi all,

I've been interested in picking up an older Anschutz for a while, and this morning I stumbled upon an Anschutz 54 with thumbhole stock for sale locally.

It's in VG condition overall, and I'd like to have it. The seller is asking for ~$550 for it...BUT...it's missing the original iron sights and hooked buttplate.

Two questions:

1. Is the asking price reasonable factoring in the missing parts?

2. How difficult will it be for me to source those missing parts - namely (1) the correct iron sights, and (2) the curved buttplate?

TIA.

I agree, it does sound like a good price but is a single or dual extractor and does it have an adjustable cheekpiece? Sights are relatively easy to find but vintage, non-adjustable buttplates and hooks are getting a little scarce.

VERY good price. Parts should be available, try EE forum

IIRC member gairlochain had some target stock parts available. May have included a butt pad or plate. Scroll through the EE listings.

Not too hard to find, if you are patient, can be had for more money if you are not. IIRC I have seen a couple hooked plates available separately, priced around $75-$125 range

The price is not bad for a bare 54 action and barrel. Sight sets come up on the EE fairly regularly, dig around the optics and sights category, and see what you find. Expect to pay $150 on up, depending on the exact sight set you find, and what other accoutrements come with, like filters or adjustable diopters, lenses, etc.

Grab it. It sounds like a deal. Gonna take a little legwork to get sorted, but still a deal. If you are willing to do the leg, that is.

Cheers

It's an aftermarket stock I believe (no adjustable cheekpiece), and not sure if it's a single or dual extractor, I'd have to go back and check.

Is the single extractor prone to issues?

Good info, thanks. I'm going to go have another (closer) look at it in the next day or two.

Late 50s and early 60s free rifles didn't have adjustable cheek pieces and I don't think dual extractors appeared until 1964. If the rifle has been well maintained you shouldn't have any issues -- they built 'em tough back then -- but if you want to actually shoot this regularly it is something you should keep in mind.

I loved my 1974 vintage 1413 and like my 1991 vintage 1913 even more. :)

Are you kidding? To buy anything new that will shoot close to that rifle you have to spend 2k. Of course it's a good price

I went back today and had another look at the rifle.

It's a Mod. 54 match, ser. 11866, but other than that there's just the proof mark with an N underneath. Any indication of age?

FWIW the bolt has a single, not dual extractor.

I handled the aftermarket thumbhole stock a fair bit and it isn't going to work for me, so in the end it looks like if I buy the rifle it would be for the action only, and I'd be looking for original stock, sights and applicable hardware.

I'll have to weigh the pros and cons of going that route vs simply putting more legwork into finding a complete older Mod 54 rifle.
