I am new to shotshell reloading so i am following the data from hodgdon site using lea load all 2. I have tried winchester HS hulls with win AA12R wad, and Federal hulls with Fed. 12S4 wads as given my data.hodgdon site. The problem is the winchester HS hulls bulge using the win AA12R wad that is recommended. The fed hulls are fine and chamber with no problems but some of the winchster hulls will not chamber (taken barrel off shotgun to check chamber)

I dont want to subsitute other wads as i have read it can cause issues and only to follow recommended data, so wondering if my grey hulls are no good for reloading.

Has anyone had this problem with Win HS grey hulls (using lee 1oz slugs)

Have you made sure all the gray hulls are HS and you don't have any of the gray older compression formed mixed in??
The hs is a three-piece Reifenhauser type design. It consists of a brass head, an inner tapered base resembling a plastic cup and a straight length of extruded plastic tubing vs the old two piece brass head and one piece with tapered walls.

I just tried a WAA12L grey wad with the lee slug and its perfect, no bulge so its the red wad thats causing this, even though its what the data recommends. I an not going to try shoot the grey as this isnt in the load data.

The new AA HS hulls are a POS design that don't reload anywhere near as well as the old style. Like 3macs1 said they are a three piece design vs the two piece compression formed design of the old AA hull...but they have near identical interior shape and capacity and are said to be interchangeable. One of the problems causing the bulge (the problem I had anyway) is too much or too deep of a crimp. Another one could be that you have an older batch of WAA12R wads. The new ones have a chamfered powder cup that help prevent a few problems that are associated with the AA HS base wad.
 
If the load fits perfect with the AA-L wad use it.

Bare in mind that the Lee slug is a 1oz design and you can fire it using just about any 1oz load data. The AA-L grey was is rated for a 1oz load so it should not be hard to find the correct data for an AA-L wad in an HS/AA hull for a 1oz load.

I use this technique all the time and have fired hundreds of improvised slugs.
1oz of lead is 1oz of lead be it shot or a slug, as long as everything fits smoothly like with the AA-L wad and you don't get pressure increasing bulges like with the Red wad, you'll be fine.

And yeah, I to find that Red Wads work well in Federal Hulls. For that reason I mostly use the Fed hulls for all my hotter slug and buckshot loads that call for a Red or Yellow wad.

I prefer AA/HS/Universal/Supertarget hulls for 7/8oz light clay loads I make for the girlfriend. I've shot thousands of 1oz loads out of Fed Hulls using a 12S0 wad. That's my go too load for shooting clay, using E3 powder and cheddite primers.

I'm just shooting stuff out here at this point cause I'm experienced with loading using the Load-All 2 and know some tricks to getting perfect crimps with it.

It's a machine you have to go by feel. For instance, when you are pre-crimping, don't just jam the handle down all the way, it will often precrimp deeper then the original crimp shortening the "OAL" of your shell. It will also cause other problems.

When you pre-crimp, feel as you push down, and usually, you can feel the plastic start to resist, that will give you a feel of the hulls natural crimp, then you're good, do not go any further.
You'll figure out what I mean, but once you nail that, you get much better crimps.

Another trick is, if you have a load that consistently crimps poorly, or the hull gets crushed and wrinkled, it's often cause the wad is not properly compressing during the final crimp.

The wad is SUPPOSE to actually crush a bit during the final crimp when your wad column gets compressed and seated together. Higher end presses are dialed in to do this during the final crimp.

The Lee, not so much. Sometimes what you have to do is precompress the wad.
When you are seating the wad just before dropping your shot, push the handle down further to crush its legs. Don't worry, you won't damage the wad, they are designed to do this, normally, as mentioned, during the final crimp.

With the Lee you have to do it for some loads during the wad seating, and this comes up most often when using tall AA wads like the L and SL, most often with AA/HS hulls. The precompression also serves to seat the wad base into the taper.

Do that, the wad will spring back up when you take the pressure off this, and your hulls, also using that feel technique, will crimp way nicer.

Again, I've loaded and shot 1000's of all sorts of different loads using these techniques, and hell, some guys I show my loads to can't tell them from factory.

Shot when pushed down the barrel will re-seat and generate a side-push on the barrel increasing the drag (and therefore the pressure)
Slugs don't do that.
That's why shot loaded shot cups sometimes develop pinholes.

Makes sense. But that would suggest that shot could generate higher pressures then a slug, no ? So the 1oz slug loading method I suggest could still be considered safe.

Agree Interchangeable was the key word when they 1st came out however the experts say now not really 100% so. Not my words

The AAHS is not consistant and averages 2.7" in overall length. The distance from the mouth to the top edge of the inner-base cup is 1.9". This allows for a maximum wad length of 1.4" (with a 0.5" crimp depth) with a very light bit of wad compression. Note: Wad compression does not consist of ramming the wad into the hull with thirty pounds (or more) pressure like accomodated by the original AA. Minor wad pressure of no more than ten pounds should be required.)

Winchester advises that the original Win AA and the new Win AAHS hulls are however interchangeable. In the general sense of speed and pressure this may be true. However, there are some fit and finish concerns that require attention and different, accomodating components. At the base of the AAHS is a .020" thick rim edge where the inner-base cup meets the plastic tube. The ridge catches the gas seal of many types of wads, thus stopping the wad from progressing deeper into the hull causing various problems such as preventing the gas seal from seating directly on the powder, which is required for proper load combustion. For this reason, the AAHS requires new loading information, outlined here with specific wad recommendations and procedures

Thanks all

The bulge appears even before the crimp is started, but with the grey waa12L no bulge. I will contact hodgdon see if they say its safe to change to waa12L everything else being the same.
 
i just checked waht i have for wads and mine are the WAA12. the bag i was using before were some older remington ones and i still used them in every hull i have (Rem,Fed,Win,Dominion,Challenger,ext.) and i use A 32.5GR charge of HS6 with my own cast lee 1oz slugs, .690 roundballs, 00 buckshot, and some #2 and #4 shot i got at a gunshow.
 
I've used the white waa12 wads for mine, 35 gr blue dot with Winchester primers or cheddite primers, you can load up to 49 grains but found great results with 35-40 range. even 800x works
