I have a 1947 jungle carbine with a 3 digit serial number that starts with AC which is correct for Fazakerley '47 dates, according to the book British Enfield rifles Volume 2 No4 and 5 rifles it says No 5 rifles came with a 2 letter prefix followed by a 4 digit serial number, anyone have a 3 digit No5??

The markings on the action of mine are quite faint and all done with electro-pencil. I see yours does not have a black-pained steel foreend tip even though it's a Fazackerly.

Oh ok so that makes sense 4 digits 0000 so mine is just still considered 4 digits it just doesnt show the zero in front of the 3 numbers
I dont think the early No 5's had the black steel forend tip, as far as s/n on the wood goes my serial number is on the bottom of the wood fore stock just behind the metal forend steel piece
Mine is AB follwed by 4 digits it's a October 1947 Fazakerly the number is also on the top of my stock near the receiver, on the bolt and the magazine.
I can understand 5thbatt having only 3 digits as it's a 1944 when they were first made.

Mine is not an anomaly, the AB prefix series would have started at AB1 and run though to AB9999, so there would be 1,2,3 & 4 digit numbers, the lowest numbers i have personally observed is Y40.

I dont understand the one I got: its a BSA-Shirley by the M47C stamped on the barrel, reciever and bolt but S/N is PF4000. The info I found states PF was post-war Fazakerley No4? Its a genuine No5 with fluted knox form and lightened reciever, all S/N's match. Ideas?
That makes sense 5thbatt, just like vehicle license plates. A1 to A9999 then B1 to B9999 etc then 2 letter prefixes AA1 to AA9999 up to ZZ9999 then 3 letter prefixes. Although that would be a huge number of N05's if they ever got to 3 letter prefixes LOL
