338 federal

338 wm does it all better.

if you want a 150yard pumpkin roller be my guest

338 cal bullets are far more expensive then .30

the 338 fed doesn't really do that much more then a 308 does that a deer could say "ya that killed me more"

I'm guessing you never owned one....

The fed puts '06 performance in a low recoil short action, and the accuracy results have been stellar, especially compared to the belted magnums like the 338 you suggest.

Under 500 yards I'd say that the 338 fed us a vastly superior cartridge to the winmag....and over 500 yards there are waaaay better choices than both of them ;)

Wow.

I'm guessing you've never shot a 338 win mag, or shot a 2600 fps rifle compared to a 3000 fps rifle at 500 yards and beyond.

There's a lot wrong with that reply. Actually, pretty much everything is wrong.

The 338 Fed is a dog. Lump it in with the 338 RCM for popularity.

i am looking at a 338 federal because i like the thought of it. if i wanted a bigger cartridge to make up for real or perceived inadequacies i would go for something by weatherby or just get a 375 h&h. thanks for the helpful pumpkin roller comment, that was awesome.

How to tell everyone on the internet you have NFC about what your talking about.

I looked at the numbers and concluded that based on availability of components, performance, and general coolness a 8x57 would be a better choice, true it will not shoot bullets that are quite as heavy, but 150 gr hand loads at 2900 is a nice option. If you buy a 338 federal you might get to keep it for life.

Except that an 8x57 requires a long action and then it makes no sense with that logic at all.
A .338 Fed can push a 160gr TTSX to the same velocity in a short action.
Why is a 8x57 better than a .338-08? Cause someone may have shot at my Great Granddaddy with one?

For the OP's sake, the .338 Fed has stuff going for it. You will never run out of brass, just run .308 through your dies and presto. .338 bullets aren't going anywhere.
The velocities this cartridge produces means that cup and core (read cheap) bullets will be very effective. And it is a solid 250yd anything gun. 200gr Hornady SPs at 2550-2600fps will knock anything with antlers into the freezer. You also have the option of stepping up, like a 250gr RN.
I second Blargon's sentiment towards a Bavarian Carbine. That would be uber cool.

wow. comparing a 338 fed to a 338wm. i tried the fed and it was hard to even match factory published numbers. for a 200 yrd cartridge its pretty good but doesn't begin to match the 338 06 or the wm. my 338 06 can get fairly close to my win mag in speed the fed was well behind the 338 06. my fed had a 22 inch barrel the 338 06 23 inch.

And that's fine, you can buy yourself a 30-40 Krag or 44-40 as well if you like the thought of it, they've written good things about those calibers as well. I have yet to find an article where gun writers say bad things about a new caliber offering, it makes for a short career.

My thoughts are that it's a 250 yard gun in the 225/250 grain bullets unless you go to lighter bullets(180) and if that's the case, you may as well stick with the 308. I don't see much purpose in going to lightweight bullets, there's a pile of 30 cals out there with better BC's. I checked into the 338 Fed extensively when buying a Kimber Montana and decided on the 325 WSM as the Federal doesn't do anything that can't be done with other more common chamberings.
A quick google search will reveal all that manufacture the Federal. As others have mentioned, better jump on it, the list is getting shorter. ;)

congratulations on badmouthing 30-40 krag and 44-40 shooters. :p i'd love to have a 44-40 lever rifle, i'm sure it'd be a dandy can roller.

i enjoy stalking and have the skill to get within the federals range when hunting, so thats a non-issue for me. i enjoy the challenge actually, anyone can blast something with a super-magnum, not to mention mangle the bejeezus out of whatever you hit at close range (had a 270, been there/done that). anything i encounter here can be taken easily with a 338 federal i'm sure.

cheers

I hunt with a Tikka in .338 Federal...it is light enough to be comfortable if carried all day.
It has recoil like a .308...it puts 210 grain Nosler partitions into small groups out as far as I am likely to see moose or deer.
It has a place in hunting in forested areas. IMHO
