Hi everyone, just recently i had passed down to me a Brno zkk-601 rifle in .308. It has an internal mag, and a set trigger. I cant find a hole lot of info on this gun and was wondering if people here new much about them. Good guns? Approximate value?
Look just pretty much like this one.

i didnt have one of those but i had one of the old brno rifles! they are built to last! not to sure what the value is if its in that good of condition it should be pretty good.

I sold a 602 in 375 h&h about 10 years ago at a Vancouver gun show, that was in very good condition, for $450.00. A fellow from another table tried to bring my price down, I told him to see me at the end of the day and he came right back with the cash. Lever Arms had them years ago for less than the American models. The downside for me was the distance to the trigger (I have shorter fingers), and the safety worked opposite to American rifles, forward is safe. Also the scope mounting points had to be shimmed. My Sako also has the same mounting problems. Personally I prefer the American rifles as they have never given me any of these problems. Bruno now have reversed the safety to the American style and ask a premium price. So basically the price as always, is what buyer is willing to pay. Start at 700 and come down until it sells.

They were built until about the early 1990's then were slightly modified to become the CZ550. The ZKK601 is a short action and I have seen them in .308, .243 and more rarely in .223 (CZ made Fox/ZKW465 et al for the .223 class as well).

Does yours have the pop-up peep sight on the rear bridge? The older ZKK models had this feature and its generally seens as a desirable action by those who like the CZ's.

I don't much care for the set trigger (neither the single set trigger of the 600 series rifles or the double set triggers offered on some of the other Brno models) but the quality of these rifles is high, and they are arguably the best of the Mausers. I think gunrunner100 is pretty close with his assessment of a 601's value, but a pop-up peep model would be worth a few dollars more. Many of us who appreciate these rifles would be willing to pay more for them than we would for much of the new stuff being sold these days.

Jeff Cooper used a 601 as the basis of one of this custom scout rifles, and it is represented frequently in Art of the Rifle. Too bad that rifle as built never became a commercial offering. I didn't understand why Brno offered the 601 in .223 when it could be had the smaller, better feeding ZKW action.

They are excellent rifles, I have a couple 600's and a 602 and have owned others.

If it is a 66-78 with the peep sight it is easily worth $800 if in good+ shape, the later ones (as mentioned above, you could buy one at Levers in the 80's for around $350) are worth a fair bit less.

While the fit and finish of the later models really did decline, the barrel quality did not.

As I said in the CZ forum, I have a 600 in 6.5x55 that hasn't been fired yet outside the factory.

It's a heavy thing though so I'll probably not hunt much with it. Maybe sitting in a stand for whitetails and that's about it.

The Brno ZKK series of rifles are a high quality, modified mauser. They are renowned for their reliability and accuracy. The 601 is about as close as you can get in a production rifle to a true short action mauser.

I have a 601 in .308 with the original Brno mount and Carl Zeiss Jena 4x scope. It shoots tight groups. I also have a very nice 600 in 7x57, but have yet to shoot it. Value on these run from about 600 to 1000 depending on features, condition, and the chambering.

The peep sight will increase the value some. Are there any modifications to it such as grinding of the bolt handle, drilled and tapped reciever, etc? The 601's in .308 and .243 seem to command a higher price than other ZKK's from what I've seen.
