Breezing over the last IPSC News publication I read over an article concerning water intake and carb loading. I'm interested in this right now - Nationals are about a week away.

Usually eat like crap drink too much and feel like a dog at the end of these big matches - and the results speak for themselves. Not saying I won't have a few with the guys or I'm trying get into some Zen shooting mode. Just want to prepare a little better.

I realize that I have no idea what that is or what it means. Help tips links? Thanks!

eat light. hydrate all day.I will "try" not to drink a ton of beer the day before I shoot....but that never works out. LOL

Generally when I shoot a Cowboy action match, in the morning I'll eat a couple of pieces of toast and coffee and stuff a couple of granola bars in the mini cooler I have attached to my gun cart.

For those matches where we take a break rather than shoot through I'll have a salad in the cooler in my car. Nothing worse than your first 2 stages after stuffing yourself with a carb heavy lunch and remember to hydrate throughout the day. After the range flag goes down then its time for steak, potatoes & beer!

I try to eat a pot full of chili the night before a match, it won't help you shoot better but it keeps the RO's back so they can't see what you are doing...muahahaha

I don't eat big on the day of a match, and avoid anything that will make your sugar level spike or make you bloated and heavy. On hot days keep hydrated, I usually drink two bottles of water to every on bottle of Gatorade. Keep your salt intake up, don't over do it but don't cut out all salt.

That's a big one for me. I can drink all the water I want but if my electrolite level goes down I feel like crap. My solution is to keep a bag of salted pretzels in my range bag and munch on a few after I shoot every stage. Seems to work well.

Any event that has me outdoors, in the sun, requiring me to have steady energy levels, has me plan my energy intake. A week or two before I lean out by reducing my junk intake and increasing my cardio slightly. The day before, I strictly watch my diet, avoiding excessively large and fatty meals. On the morning I have a light breakfast, which in my case is a small bowl of complex carbohydrates. I plan to keep my energy levels consistent by eating every few hours. I only consume complex carbs, as they release energy slower, so you don't get any sugar spikes. I avoid the large lunches, as a large meal requires too much energy to break down, which makes me lethargic. Then, throughout the day I consume fluids to keep my hydration up. I usually use Powerade Zero, which eliminates the sugars but provides for the electrolytes. Hope this helps.

Starting atleast 2 days before, VRBR and just R on the day of.

(vr)Vodka Redbull, (b)Beer, (r)Redbull

Its good to map out the porta potties on the range too ;)

See you in hell....errr Brandon, Ill be the guy with the booze trying to give you a drink.

i just eat light and bring a can of gatorade powder with me if the match provides drinking water

I always bring my own water, level III matches should provide some on every range but for example the nationals in BC a couple of years ago had virtually nothing.

get it all out before going to the range, so you don't have to use the port-o-john on site.

remember the 2005 Nationals in NB. I had to go in the porta potie on the range...good god that was a mistake. It was about 33 out that day,..and the potty was in the bright sun. I was sweating to death in the heat and stench on the port a pottie. I walked out and startled some shooters,...i had sweat pouring down my face and looked like I had just survived 5 days in the desert. All I managed to say was, " s**t sauna!"....LOL...the folks that heard that broke into laughter..

I would freeze Orange juice in half full gatoraid bottles then top up with just water when I pulled them out of the freezer the AM of the match. They would slowly melt and I could get a couple of mouthfuls of water and juice before I started each stage. Two 16 oz bottles would last a match before they were all melted and consumed.

If I felt like a sugary treat I would freeze the bottles 2/3 full of OJ then top up with 7Up or ginge ale; this gave me a bit of a boost if I timed it right.

Watch the sun.
This year I was 'blessed' to shoot 3 major matches in temperatures around 35-38 C
Everyone will take hit different way, but for sure have lots of water or Gatorade - I don't care for that. Stay in shade as much as you can, don't eat to much in hot temps.
