I want to pick up a semi auto 22 today from wholesale sports. Everything I read tells me to buy the Ruger 10-22, but I am wondering what peoples experience with the Savage combo is. If its a decent setup, then thats more money I can save for my main rifle.

I have been looking at the sako A7 for my main rifle, which comes with a 3-9 x 40mm Burris riflescope (If I went this way the scope would probably get replaced). Would this scope be overkill for the 22?

With the Burris, I could buy the Ruger 22, and put that scope on it.

Or I can buy the savage combo...

I just dont want a POS that jams all the times, or a 4 power scope that gathers dust in the closet if it doesnt cut it for me.

Go for the Ruger

the 3-9x40 is a very good match for a .22 that sees lots of field work with a healthy dose of paper punching... Not enough mag for serious target work but more then enough for a bone stock 10/22...

Best be grabbing lots of mini mags or stingers for the break in... The Federal 525 bulk pack stuff is decent as well.

Aheny, if you're looking for an accurate rimfire I'd buy a Savage 93R-17 bolt action in .17HMR. You combine that with a 3-9X40 or 4-12X40 and you'll be shooting little groups out to 200 yards, where a .22 is pushing it at 100 yards. If you're just looking at blasting away with a .22 and not concerned about accuracy, then get the semi auto Ruger 10/22, it's a fun plinker! I've got the Savage in .17HMR with the 4-12X40 scope and it's an MOA rifle that's fun to shoot, and I use it turkey hunting as well!

Sorry but my Savage MKII is a borderline MOA rifle with the right ammo, and costs a fraction of what 17HMR does. Hell I can reload .223 for around the same cost as 17HMR.

The idea of a rimfire is cost savings and the 17HMR doesn't offer that. Especially considering you will likely have to buy a whole new cleaning setup for that tiny bore.

OP, the 10/22 is the way to go in a semi, but accuracy takes some serious upgrades.

A bolt action like the Savage MKII, or Marlin XT22 is the way to go if you want a cheap rifle to be accurate as hell, for pennies a shot.

Thanks for the advice guys. I am impressed with the .17 HMR, but as mlehtovaara said, I dont see it as an alternative to the .22

I want something I can fire thousands of rounds through to get my accuracy back, after years of not shooting.

I'm really hoping to get accurate/consistent enough for an elk hunt this season.

Time to bring my 10/22 off to the range!

No you can't

Almost true, the cheapest 17 HMR that I bought at full price was 0.25$ per round which is very close to my 223 Rem reloading cost :(
I sold my Savage 93R17 BTVS last year because of ammo cost alone and got a Savage Mk II BTVS to replace it.

17 HMR is awesome but somewhat expensive for plinking.
