I like Long Branch No.4's. I'm a patriot. That's the sole reason.

My close second is a swede mauser. I like the steel and the 6.5X55 cartridge.

Well out of my collection was my Garand

but now, after being able to find brass, bullets and dies, I think I like shooting my French Bertheir in 8mm Lebel. It is a Turkish Forestry Service rifle.

My Nagoya 1st Series Type 99, matching throughout, intact MUM. Two boxes of ammo and I've never fired a shot :)

My Lebel 1886m93. I love the look and the loading mecanism. I know it is not the best mecanism, but a very elegant rifle. The bayonet is very nice too!

In terms of range shooting, my Beretta Garand would definitely get the nod --- the heft and smoothness make the 30-06 a pussycat. The only negative is the lack of surplus ammo these days.

In terms of fondling, my recently-acquired Port K98 owns that crown.

If you were to relax the dates to allow a 1952 design, then my Czech Vz. 52/57 sniper wins on both counts --- cheap ammunition and a great rifle take take apart and admire.

overall (looks, respect, sheer amazement and wonder)- garand
looks - kar98 in a blonde stock
sheer simplicity & respect - mosin
