my Swissarms 551LB just died

Just got back from the range.

When I got there the boss there told me that they broke my rifle. (I'm keeping my rifle there because I'm currently living at a student-residency, where I can't store a long arm)

He only did a "function check" with a few rounds and the gas piston broke.

He's for sure not s**tting me, since he's a great guy which I have known for a few years and he has a whole arms room full of similar stuff at his disposal. And he's getting me a new piston.

Had the rifle for around 8 or 9 years and used it often, and hard. I have no idea how many rounds I put through it in that time.

Now I'm taking it back to SAN to have it checked out, maybe the bbl is also shot out.

Only lately I replaced it with a 553LB, but for some reason I brought the 551 instead of the 553 with me. The 553 is sitting at home in the gun-locker, waiting for me.

Can someone post a picture for me?

Just had a phonecall with someone from SAN.

The piston has a "WF" stamp, meaning that it was made at the "Waffenfabrik Bern". They ceased production for SIG-parts sometimes in the middle 90's.

And I had the rifle for 8 years or so and put thousands of rounds through it. It was just a matter of time before it broke. :D

It's just that's a really inconvinient time. All my other rifles are on the other side of the country and I'm not going home anytime soon.

This is the second time a Swissrifle fails. About 8 years ago the 552 had a broken extractor. (we just switched bolt heads and continued shooting)

You don't have that problem with a DI AR rifle. ;)
 
Keep the piston. Parts you legitimately wore out are their own trophy.

I like that idea of it being a trophy! As for HAmster damn you mustve put alot downrange for that to happen finally.

So far I didn't think of keeping the parts as a sourvenir, because for me that's just something that wears out. I've seen lots of guns that fail, they all do at some point.

@Otokiak: You have no idea what this rifle went through. :D
Short of going to an actual war this rifle has seen pretty much everything, and there are lots of options for shooting in Switzerland.

And ever since I got the 553LB, the 551LB was the ##### that I have to friends who didn't have a rifle, or couldn't bring a rifle along.

But it's going back to the factory for a refurbishment as soon as possible.
