savage mk II vs marlin xt-22

Hi,

Looking for a new bolt action 22.
Both seem great, the xt22 being a newer model.
Both have the newer trigger setup, magazine fed, bolt action.
I'm looking at varmint barrel and synthetic stock, so mk II fv or fv-sr for the savage, and the xt22vr for the marlin.

Both get great reviews.
If the pricing is anywhere near close, which it is, which one would you give the nod to?

Well i do not have experience with the heavy barrel model however i do have the regular model XT 22lr
And i can not say enough about how awesome it is

Exactly.
I looked at the CZ455 american, but by the time I add a reasonable priced scope, rings, and maybe a bipod, and HST, I'm at 800 dollars +.

I am just waiting for my PAL in the mail, so 800 for my first firearm will get me in the doghouse, plus I want money left over for an SKS or an MN 91/30 in a short while :eek:
 
Savage. The only way that Marlin would get the nod is if you were choosing based on the stock. Both are synthetic, but the geometry on the Marlin is a bit better. I have a Savage 93FV (.22 mag version of the Mark II FV) and it never hindered me any. Here is that rifle;

Marlin's trigger is a copy of the Savage accutrigger, but not the very same. The Mark IIs have been around longer than the XT series of Marlins, and maybe the "squeaky wheel gets the grease"....but you sure read some strange stuff about Marlin Quality Control these days. XT questions have popped-up on this forum (not just RFC) that have scared me-off of the idea of getting an XT17. Price is attractive though. An XT is about $202 where I shop, a Savage 93FV about $263.
 
The Savage has a long pedigree and proven ability, but don't discount the Marlin; the micro-groove barrel produces accuracy far beyond its weight class.

Also; you can get an XT with the tube magazine, which not only looks better but handles better than any box magazine, for me anyway. Holds twice the number of rounds, don't have to spend $20 for every new magazine. Can't lose a tube mag, either. Oh, and no 'magazine thumb' after an extended visit to the range.

Try to handle each, see which one feels better; that should be the most important part of your decision.
 
Our Savage MK II BV is extremely accurate with a wide variety of ammo and is a pleasure to use. Zero complaints.

I agree... I'm doing the same shopping comparing the wood stocked versions of these two rifles. I managed to handle both of them and while they look almost identical in shape I swear one felt better in my hands than the other.... so now I've got to go back and check the other one again to make sure it wasn't just me. :p

From my reading it seems you'll find fans of both Marlin and Savage, and they both have very similar features and technology (like micro grooves, adjustable triggers). So I figured I should let it come down to the furniture and ergonomics.
 
As of late Marlin/Remington have been having quality control issues. Feeding, extracting, headspace and fit & finish. IMHO until they work it out, go with the Savage. I have the MkII bv. Its pretty and it shoots the cheap stuff really well. REALLY shines when you put Stingers through it though!
 
I recently handled both. I liked the magazine better on the Marlin. Bolt feeling was pretty similar between both, (will get better with use on both as well). However the stock fit much better with the Marlin.
At the end of the day i walked out of the store with the Marlin XT 22 and payed only $165 after tax. It is a blast to shoot and is perfect for my needs
 
I have the marlin and its absolutely amazing...I can put 5 shot groups through the same hole at 50yrds benched. I love it
