Hi there. I'm new to skeet shooting. I have a remmington express 870 super mag pump that I've been using for the last while and have discovered I love shooting clays. So much I'm considering applying for a membership at my loca gun cub(all my shooting has been hand thrown in a field) nmy question is can anyone recommend a novice trap shooter gun? Or, I live in prince George BC so looking for anyone that would have such a thing and/ or take me to the local range to give it a better try. Thanks. Pm if your interested.

Adrian

I would stick with what you got and join the club. Keep an eye as to what the regulars are shooting. Let the other members know you are looking. You may get a few suggestions and an offer to try several guns and you may be made aware of certain guns for sale.

Covey Ridge is bang on with his advice. The same thing happen to me and just as adivsed I joined and learned. I asked questions and every one was more than willing to help. Good luck and enjoy. I'm thinking about joining back up myself.

what to buy

CR is right. You need to gain some first hand knowledge/experience of which games you prefer by playing them before you buy. You will not get this in a field with hand thrown clays, so first thing is to join/visit/test drive a good club.

Case in point: skeet, trap and sporting clays are three different games which all have specialized (slightly) different equipment that best suit them. Your 870 will serve well enough for all the games to figure out which game is the one you want to blow your shooting budget on (doubles'll be a bit of a chore though).

The earlier you buy the more likely you will regret your purchase within a year.

I think Adrian would be better served by suggesting a good range near Prince George, than suggesting any particular firearm.

Adrian,
if that does not work and you are in the Calgary area, pm me with a bit of notice and maybe we can meet at the a.h.e.i.a. range. Open Wednedsday to Sunday. There is a good selection of firearms that you may try on a rental basis and there is usually aheia qualified instructors near that may be able to help you with the basics.

PG has a decent trap range off Hwy 16 west of town. Some decent guys the last time I shot there. There are always some old farts harumphing around a trap range but you can't take them too seriously. Google should provide all the info you need. Go out there on practice days and shoot. Ask questions and then shoot some more. Your 870 will work fine until you get practiced up a bit.
To the best of my knowledge PG does not offer Skeet and maybe set up Sporting Clays once a year or so.
IMHO, when it comes to improving at trap, buy ammo, not guns.
