Cleaning the red's

Hey guys,
im just wondering how far should i go when cleaning my Mosin and SVT-40 after firing corrosive ammo. Currently im just cleaning the barrel, bolt/bolt carrier and gas system and magwell area. My question is, should i be taking apart the bolt (firing pin and extractor) and other small parts every time i fire it or is that a little excessive?

Also on a semi related note, is it taboo to post a public thread asking what other CGN'ers think about a firearm for sale in the EE forums, or should i just keep it hush-hush and PM members (have no "forum friends" atm).

Your cleaning is good the way you do. Beside the barrel, the most important is the gas system(gas tube,piston,regulator and the gas port).

I've seen it done before when there's something worth discussing (adds claiming to be something they're not) but if you're posting to complain about prices or so on, generally that starts up a 'if you don't want to pay it then shut up and move on, it's a free country' type discussion with people flaming one another. I try to keep my head low (as you can see not at the moment).

If you just want to know if it's a good deal, what I've done is see what such items are going for at gun shops (new and used). Usually a decent reference point. Just remember, if you draw attention to a sale you're interested in, somebody else may notice it and snatch it before you do.

I clean anywhere the gas residue could settle. The outside of the exposed barrel, the sights, on my SVT the metal guards at the front of the stock, the bayonet if I've used it, etc. I also take the extra 5-10 minutes and break the bolt down and clean all the pieces as well.

My normal routine when shooting corrosive is as follows.
1. put 2 kettles of water on to boil
2. while those are doing their thing I dissaemble everything
3. I then take the small parts and put them in a little of dish of Ed's Red to have a soak
4. Take the now boiled water and a funnel and put a kettles worth through the barrel. Have a look after this and use the second if I think it needs it
5. Start doing a normal cleaning using Ed's Red, being sure to wipe anything down that was exposed to the water
6. When clean, I reassemble.
7. I then go back the the rifle 2 days later and do another cycle of 1 wet patch and then dry patches until they come out clean. Then an oiled patch.

I know this seems like a lot, but I'd rather do this then have a rust bucket.
