1st Hunt with future father-inlaw

Go buy a nice 300 Win Mag and you will have a rifle and cartridge you can hunt all game in NA with. This is only your second hunt in a life time of hunting, think forward a few years you may want a grizzly or polar bear, bison or musk ox, maybe you'll go to Africa or Asia. The 300 WM is up to all of this except the really big stuff in Africa.
You can shoot like a lazer with 150 gr bullets and you can hit like a sledgehammer with 220 gn Partitions, for bison or big bears. If ever there was a one size fits all for ungulates it is probably the 300 WM or one of it's close cousins. It is also one of those cartridges that will be in any backwoods hardware or convienience store that sell ammo.
This also tells your future F-i-L that you are your own man and a self thinker and you can use all these points I have just made to justify your position.
You therefore become a forward thinker in his eyes and you are also being frugal because you will never need another rifle for any hunting you may do in the future almost anywhere in the world. (need has nothing to do with want, take from a guy with more than 100 firearms)
JMHO.

Yes, a 270 win is plenty of gun
No, a 270 WSM is not a significant improvement

Basically exactly what CaffeineSam said, as well as what The Spank said (post 4 & 6)

Personally I think the WSM's are all - overpriced cartridges, expensive to load, and there is no noticable improvement for the extra (double) money they cost to buy.

I have both a; .270 Rem 700 & .308 T3 Hunter and either would do the trick

As a novice shooter, ammo price/availability is huge. get a 270 or 30-06, buy cheap ammo and shoot it, shoot it, shoot it until it becomes second nature. Then pick your shot and drop the large ungulate

Get a .308 and really tell him what you think.
I'm a bigger fan of the .270 WCF than the wanna be Whizzum.
Oh my the extra 200fps!!
Just get the 130gr TTSX load and go kill stuff

Tell him you asked your fiance, and she said the diameter of the projectiles being equal, she thought the longer cartridge was preferable.

Get the .270 win. The Tikka T3 would be a great choice IMO. Buy some lower priced ammo for practice and then some premium bullets( Nosler Partition, Barnes TSX etc) and go hunting.

Maybe he wants to shoot 270 short mag...but forgets his ammo at home to save money..!!!!

All kidding aside...if you like and want a 270 win...buy what you want and not what some one else wants. You are the one feeding it and paying for it.Also as stated b4,forgot your ammo, small town hardware stores carry 270 win but not short mag ammo as there isnt any real call for it.I live in a small town 2 hours east of edmonton and can buy 270 win,30-06,30-30 etc...but not any of the short mag stuff. In fact I only know of 2 ppl that shoot 300 short mags out of a group of 50 or so hunters.

Lots of guys hunting with the more basic cartridges that dont break the pocket book every time you open it...and moose just seem to drop like flies when hit correctly with 1 good shot.My second last moose I shot with a 340WBY( handloaded hot 250 grainers) and dropped right there in its footy prints. My last cow moose was shot with ( the tiny to me calibre choice) 7mm WBY with 175 grain remington factory ammo at the same distance, approx 200 yards and guess what happened...she too went straight down.

2 different calibres, diff slug weights,velocities,energy...but same result with good bullet placement...a freezer full of moose snacks..:D

PS.... 200 fps difference dont mean nuthin...if you dont have or cant find any ammo to shoot out of it..
