Bought new rifle, Old Sako AV in 9.3 X 300 WM - 2967 FPS with 286 NPs

Fired 9.3x64 RWS brass has a case capacity of 88.1 grains of water full to the top I just measured.

Google searching tells me fired 300win mag brass has about 90 grains of water full to the top. You can add a bit of weight on that once you neck it up for the wider 9.3 case mouth.

Capacities are very close.

Nosler manual states 9.3x64 CIP max pressure of 64,000psi I will have to assume they pressure tested their loads up to this. So max velocity out of a 25.5" bbl was 2690fps with a 286g bullet

And just for fun,
Fired 375rum brass has 117.6 grains of water capacity full to the top. It pushes a 300g bullet 2860fps out of a 26" bbl.

The 378 wby mag water capacity is 138 grains and with it's free bore it is able to push 300g bullet at 2890fps out of a 26" bbl

Taken from Nosler manual.

Sir, you state the obvious, published known. I live well beyond those "lawyer approved" parameters in the land of maximum external ballistics from any given cartridge, within the limits of the brass case. This is my playground, this is where learning happens. I neither invite nor demand that anyone play on my playground and anyone who ventures here does so at their own risk. What I will report will be factual within the confines of the equipment I have to measure velocities, which is the best money can buy at this time. I will tell you that I do not have the slightest interest in knowing the PSI or CUP of any of my loads, as long as the brass case contains it and I can reload it several times. This is the single limiting factor to external ballistics today.
This is my mantra and I do not wish to be critisized for the data I will publish shortly. Accept or ignore any or all of what I will publish later that's your choice.

And the trajectory difference between the 286gr bullet exiting the muzzle at 2690fps vs 2950fps is less than 1.5" at 400 yards.:)

Gentlemen; my delving into the world of external ballistics has absolutely nothing to do with terminal ballistics.
Gatehouse and Bearkilr, an animal can only be dead once and I agree that any NA animal will succum to a 30-06. This has nothing to do with what I do with rifles and cartridges. My quest is to wring out the utmost from any cartridge, is it necessary, of course not. It is my hobby and my interest, no different than racing cars. Is a 250 MPH car necessary to fetch groceries, no, but if you want to do an 8 sec 1/4 mile it is. Is an 8 sec 1/4 mile necessary, of course not, but the quest is, in order to further the sport and the knowledge.
Reloading is no different, with all the new powders and projectiles the sky is the limit. This is what I do for fun and entertainment, I used to race cars, bungi jump, skydive, rodeo, womanize, hunt dangerous game with bows, fly light aircraft in unflyable weather, drink too much and fight. Now I load the sh!t out of rifles to see what they are capable of. It has nothing to do with hunting, and is solely for my own entertainment and knowledge of exterior ballistics. I will share the results with the people here who are interested, and those who disagree with my quest are free to not partake in my dissertation.

I was genuinely curious to see if you figured you would be able to match the 9.3x64. It would be an interesting cartridge, especially for the reason Why not? mentioned, if it would come close. No sarcasm intended.
In regard to pressure limits, I've found the older Lee manuals top loads are pretty close to max for many calibers and too much for some. :D

bearkilr, it easily matches the 9.3X64. Very easily. :)

Doug, youre longing for a 270 lol.

hammock, he just doesn't quite get it.....yet! ;)

However, he does very well at most everything he puts his hand to.

Ted

Yep, you gotta pick the one caliber in the world that I have absolutely no use for, in any of it's variations. Just my own little personal bigotry!!!! What a waste of lead, copper and literature, the 277 bore is!!!!!!!!!!! Never liked Jack O'Connor either!!!!!!!!!!

You know you're getting close when they start to manifest the denial so strongly.

Doug
You are just like your cousins down my way, they always have to find things out the hard way.:p
And there is nothing whatsoever wrong with a 270 weatherby. If it's not fast enough for you there was a fella with a 6.5 RUM for sale the other day.
