OP, there a a lot of 14.5" and 18" AR's in NZ. Everyone seems to be happy with their rifles.
My 14.5 has been flawless, as has the one purchased by my Brother in law. Both have shot a number of matches and seen regular range shooting with no problems. Mine is probably at a round count of around 800 rounds by now, has been cleaned a total of two times and has never faltered.
Both have digested a mix of steel and brass cased ammo without issue. Handloads see my rifle shooting around 3/4" groups at 100m with a 4x scope. My match AR will shoot 1/2" groups, but then again it cost nearly twice as much so it bloody well should shoot better than my bush/range beater!
I'd say to ignore a lot of the white noise that seems to accompany any NEA threads, and maybe give some consideration to the experiences of those who actually own and shoot their NEA ARs rather than those who might have fingerf$@ked one in a shop one time or looked at some pictures on the internet.
At the end of the day, they're ARs. If they aren't quite right, they're pretty easy to fix. If you don't like one part, swap it for another until you get the mix that works for you.
Just be sure to buy lots of ammo and have a blast shooting it!
