Currently have a red dot one on my Marlin 30-30. Great for use at 100ft or less but this fall Im going deer hunting in a combination of farm fields and bush... Going to need something else for the possible longer distance field shot. Heard of a few people going with a min. 2x-4x.?? also heard of a few people on the net who put together a dual scope system(that allows them practicality for a combination of open fields and bush) where id have the zoom for the longer shot but beable to side mount a red dot for the close shots? So far I had a few friends tell me to just use the iron sights but I really do enjoy using a red dot, plus i already have one.

any thoughts?

Low fixed power, 2.5x. or 1-4 variable. 4x fixed can be too much for close bush.

If in doubt, go lower power but better quality glass.

I like the idea of the 1-4.. any recomendation on brand and model?
I still dont have "permission" to access the exchange parts here, might look to buy new elsewhere but cant seem to find any scopes that are reasonably priced for 1-4.

well 150ish... but that leupold is like 300.

I would say the ideal scope would be that leupold. However, if you don't want to drop the dough, which is fine, I would look at a 2-7 Redfield. At 2 power you can still keep both eyes open allowing for fast target aquisition. You probably won't need 7 power a whole bunch, but it's there if you do.

There isn't a single scope for $150 I would put on any hunting rifle I own, and I am not well off or a snob at all.

The scope is the weak link in any hunting setup, and should not be the piece of equipment you go cheap on.

Ask me how I found out.........

Minimum would be that redfield and it's just over $200.

Spending the extra on the Leupold would be a very wise decision IMHO. ;)

I've seen the Redfield 2-7 for $149 at Bass Pro. They haven't had them in stock for awhile though.

Yeah i agree for sure... but when budget is mega tight and you need a scope your not left with many options.

Use Irons for now, and save for the scope.

When you have that trophy in front of you and shoulder your gun only to see the reticle has fallen, and your scope is f*^ked, you will remember my name!

+1

Go to a peep sight or ghost ring. Plenty accurate out to 150+ metres.

A number of years ago my club had a competition. Open to ANY gun/optic combination. Targets from 25 to 150m and shooting from multiple positions (prone, sitting, offhand).

The winner? An older gentleman shooting a traditional (target) muzzleloader with peep sights. It was the first and last time they held that competition......

I know it's about $100 more than you budget, but the leupold FXII 2.5 x 20mm fixed power only weighs 6.5 ounces!! It also has 5" of eye relief. Here it is on my 45-70 SBL. The rifle handles like the scope is not even there, and with the wide field of view it is still good in close
