So my brother came over for a drink last night, he told me we are going to africa next year I am thinking What!!! He said he will pay for the safari all i have to pay for is my plane ticket.
Wonding how many of you guys have went and what to look for and what not to.
We are looking to go for plains game, Kudu,Impala, Mostly the "deer" type of game, 7-14 days, South Africa was our first idea but is there better choices?

I am supper stoked to start planning, I never thought I would get to the "dark content" I always thought I would need to win the lottery, And I guess I kindof did with my brother taking me.

Thanks guys

have fun i was planing to for a hunt just like yours but something else cought my eye so the money had to go to that

id have the capes tanned and then later on have them mounted because this is the biggest cost

Wow congrats you did hit the jackpot there!
start saving money for taxidermy and shipping to get your trophies back home
IMHO Frig the taxidermy, maybe a rug and some bare skull mounts, but aside from that I'd take the taxidermy budget and tell your bros you are adding days and species to your hunt. I aint got any 'taxidermy' from the past 30 years of hunting and it has not detracted one bit from the enjoyment or from the memories. Seems a shame to forgo an extra week or ten days of barbeque, beers and plains game with your broz for the sake of something hanging on a wall. But then again I am the kinda guy that would leave a cape on the mnt to make room for a few extra strips of neck meat and shank.LOL The only memories that matter are the ones you and your bros will have locked in the grey matter you will have those no matter who does'nt mount another kudo.
Now if you are absolutley flush with cash and can hunt more then you want anyway by all means mount the most spectacular of the trophies.

Have fun planning, getting your gear ready, buying rifles, dreaming and learning. Will look forward to your pic laden trip report.

I agree in most cases, but hes not going to africa for the meat.

we are planning on europein mounts thats what all our game is so far. Trying to find out what dip and crateing the skulls cost but having no luck so far and holy crap there are huge price diffrences between outfitters from day rate and trophy fees as much as 400 bucks a day ph costs and 1500 for the same animal!!

Dip and pack averages $500 per hunter. If they can screw you on the shipping they will.

Typically the skinners will have the skulls so clean that a dog wouldn't chew them. That part is included.

Rates vary with how much an outfitter can charge. If they charge less, its because they need to to get the clients. If they could charge double they would.

On average the outfitters that have a history of produceing the best trophies can charge the highest rates, and because of that will have the best areas. Its a bit of a vicious circle, but there is a reason for the saying "Only a rich man can afford a cheap safari." Haveing said that, if you can afford to be wrong once in a while or can drop everything and take short notice hunts there are deals to be had. Few can.

Watch for extra charges, and check to see if travel days are free, at reduced rate or at full dayrate. Makes a big difference. Packages can a good deal for a first trip.

I hunted Namibia and had a spectacular trip. You can fly Toronto to Frankfurt then straight to Windhoek. I flew Lufthansa and checked my baggage straight through to Windhoek. I didn't have to retrieve my luggage or get any transit permits. I used a booking agent for the benefit of his experience and bargaining power if I had any issues, (I did not). I had my taxidermy done right in Namibia. A shoulder mount Kudu, shoulder mount Impala, A zebra rug ans several European skull mounts all at a fraction of the cost. Shipping was very reasonable, especially compared to getting work done here.
You will have a great time, good hunting.

Find out which country you're going to, Africa is a big place and things are done differently in different areas. South Africa for instance offers comparatively inexpensive hunts conducted on large farms where the hunter is put up in accommodations ranging from comfortable to luxurious. At the other end of the spectrum, Tanzania offers true wilderness hunting, conducted from fly in tent camps, which are often located on hippo filled rivers, and are equally as comfortable as permanent camps (hot showers, flush toilets, great food, real beds, etc). Tanzania might well be the most expensive country in East Africa to hunt. Be sure to book for 10 days not 7, as you're just getting a feel for the place in the first week, and the difference in cost is not so great considering what you'll get out of it.
