New Norc Shorty - Front Sight Too Long?

My son has admired my M14 and decided that he wanted one for his birthday - but being different decided on the Shorty.

I saw one at P&D, bought it, but could not help but wonder if the front blade of the sight is too long? I protrudes up from the sight wings about 3/16" or so.

Is that normal? Of course he has not shot it yet as the B-day comes mid August.

The rest looks fine - tight bolt, front sight nicely indexed front sight, trigger has moderate creep and there is about a gallon of cosmo absorbed in every nook and cranny!

Still can't help wonder whether that front sight is supposed to be that tall? :confused:
 
I'd bet on it.

My Norc is a shorty, but it was cut down by a gunsmith (45ACPKING, formerly M14Doctor) and it shoots wayyyyy high at 100 yds. The front sight is the same as the one on the stock barrel, so I need a taller front sight.
 
In short...yes, it's normal. The front sight has to be higher because the barrel is shorter...otherwise you might not get the proper sighting plane. It still may be too high...but that just means you have to file it down a bit. It would be much harder to make it higher if needed...
 
Yup, my shorty's front blade is nice and high. And you guys are right, I wish the copying engineers could sort that out.... :eek:

The front sight bases are original, so they would need to remake/remold them to make them higher. The blades are simply replaced. Many of the parts were made 20 years ago.

They are pretty hard to come by. You will need to find someone who modified a shortie to use a different front setup. Either uses a gaslock front sight or had a sight mount added to the gas system so they now have a system that uses standard height sights and no longer needs the taller sight

Yup, email me ;) can't have ya runnin around with a rifle I built and not be happy with the sight hehehe.
I've got a few factory tall ones from the 18.5' norcs and a few we carefully added material to with the tig torch and then detailed. *please note, I'm not a dealer here and this post is not meant to "solicit" anyone, just offerin to help out with a free taller sight for Shredder ;)
