bigbore hunters

In my .35 Whelen, .375 H& H and 45-70, I normally use jacketed. But I could use only cast bullets in the 45-70 and be happy with that.

medium bore -9.3x62mm - jacketed
big bore -45/70 - hard cast
matter of speed + bore dia I guess, dam the 45's almost the size of expanded bullet on the way in :D

I'm trying to decide if I want hard cast or a jacketed flavor for my 4570. It groups both barrels very tight with 405gr remington flatpoints but cast bullets are cheaper and much easier to come by

Anything moose or black bear hit in the chest with a .458 405gr will die. I'm leaning toward bullet barns 405gr 3 lube grooved with the gas check

It is hard to steer away from the Leverevolution 325 gr for my Steyr BB 450 Marlin, hit like a train and still group under 3 inchs @ 200 yards, very good ammo... JP.

I tried these. Accurate and consistent. Won't penetrate worth crap. A 4l water jug shredded each bullet. They'd be ok on small deer but I'd never shoot a moose elk or bear with one

The parameters that determine the choice of bullet for a big bore is similar to those that determine the choice of bullet for a small bore. What do you intend to shoot, and how fast will the bullet be going? The choice of jacketed, mono-metal, or cast bullet is dependent upon the velocity you're loading to. I shoot both cast and jacketed bullets in my .458, and both provide good performance. I wouldn't consider a big game load using a cast bullet in my .375 where the velocity runs upwards of 2300 to 2900 fps depending on the bullet weight; so my cast bullet loads in the .375 (300 @ 1200) are just for small game. Conversely, I no longer shoot any bullets in my .44 other than 325 gr WFNs, as the jacketed bullets do nothing better, except cost more.

for the .45-70 you cloud go two ways hard cast with a nice wide meplat or a bullet cast in somthing like 20 to 1 leand/tin witch is ductile and will expand with a smaller meplat and slightly rounded nose.

dont use WW alloy that has not been water droped becaue in it softer format it likes to break up when it expands a alloy like 20 to 1 lead tin will not.

a hard cast with a wide meplat will punch a hole the same way it does on paper (a softer bullet will do the same but expand after)

I've just been casting for six months or so, but I only shoot cast in 45-70, and once I run out of jacketed for .454 it will become cast only as well. I'm experimenting with cast in most everything I shoot that is .30 cal or larger. I may end up shooting cast only in my 9.3x57 and 9.3x62 as well.

Only a medium bore guy thus far and use jacketed bullets in my .35's (win & whelen).
Maybe if I ever get into the .45 or larger club I might try cast.

45/70 siamese mauser action, I only fired 350gr. gas check (NOE mold) at 2230 fps.
9.3x62 custom mausere, till now only jkt 286 gr. at 2400 fps (discontinued Norma bullet, cupro/nickel jct PPDC plastic point dual core) but recently I received a new NOE mold
280 gr. gas check. This fall I will try casting.

If any member experience good results with casting in 9.3x62 and care in sharing the data I will appreciate.

tks, roberto
