Cast bullets in a 9.3 x 57

It seems the 9.3x57 should be a natural candidate for shooting cast boolits, and with that thought in mind i just purchased a 4C gas check 280 gr .368" mould from NOE.

Is anyone else shooting cast in a 9.3x57? How's it working for you?
 
its one id love to try it in too a bullet with a good bore ride and a flat point cast with a soft nose would be hell on deer

i thought of paper patching too as you can use jacketed data because you have a paper jacket on the bullet
 
I don't have experience with 9,3-57 but quite a bit with 35Rem and 358Win, symmilarly cast bullet friendly cartridges. IMHO anytime good accuracy, minimal leading and full power is desired with heavy for caliber bullets at speeds in excess of 1600fps-1700fps the use of harder alloy lead (15 brinnel+), .001"-.002" oversize bullet, good lube and gas check is required.

I'm going to try IMR4895 and aim for 1700-1800 fps. What powder did you use with the 35 rem and 358 winchester with cast bullets?

I just loaded a dozen rounds for my 9.3x57 with some 250 grain cast with wheel weights that I threw from a single cavity Lyman 366408 mold, and dropped straight into ice water for hardening.

Can't wait to get to the range with them.

I didn't download that batch of handloads either; I loaded them with the same recipe I shoot 270 grain speers with. Pressure will, of course, not be an issue. I'm just hoping accuracy and leading are fine.

PS, I share your gut feeling that the 9.3 x 57 and 9.3 x 62 seem naturals for cast bullets!
 
I've "been meaning to get around to this" for some time (story of my life...) I got some 9.3 cast bullets from Bullet Barn so I'm all set to go. However, my Husky 146 seems to have a tight throat and won't chamber these :( So I got an an adjustable reamer and have carefully reamed the inside of the necks so that the OD doesn't exceed the chamber size. Haven't tried to shoot them yet, though. I'm thinking I might want to crimp the cases after loading, which will mean reaming out an 8x57 Lee Crimp Die as they don't do a 9.3.

However, this may not be the same for you. Go to the Swedish Civilian Arms forum of Gunboards; there may be some info there. I believe a fellow in Chilliwack, B.C., was instrumental in getting Lois (Bullet Barn) to start making the cast bullets, but I can't remember his name at the moment. I'll see what I can dig up from my files; in the meantime I have to go sit/sleep in my truck tonight as a bear has been eating my neighbour's alpacas...

Rifle: 9.3x57 Husqvarna M46 - 26" bbl.
Powder: 36 gr IMR4895
Lube: Jake's Red. (No leading visible after 10 shots fired)
Velocity: 1700 fps (estimated by QUICKLOAD)

I only loaded 10 rounds and "wasted" the first 7 on the 100 yard gong. Recoil is a push not a shove and 280 gr does smack that gong with a very satisfying KaWHAP! Looks like this boolit has potential.

Looks good.

What twist is your barrel? "They" say that you need at least a 1:12 for a bullet that heavy.
 
Twist rate is 1-14". The M46 Husqvarnas were designed to lob 286 grain projectiles at 2050-ish fps so they are fairly well suited to cast boolits. My M46 was made in 1928. It's a slick little rifle that I just like better every time i shoot it.
