Is this a Polytech vs Norinco thing or is it just certain years?

Edit: After some reading and the realization I have never really taken a close look at the hand guard on my shortie it may in fact be made of fiberglass and not the thin pat metal I thought it was. And I have it boxed up to ship out for some work so I can't check.

So what is the issue?

I ditched my hand guard for a full-length try-rail so I could mount optics without one of those scope mounts that go over the ejection port part of the receiver.

I don't like cluncky palstic hand guard on my Ploytechand I want to replace it with one similar to that on my shortie. I thought the one on my shortie was a thin pot metal but it may in fact be fiberglass.

I was wondering if all Polytechs had the plasric handguard? or just some years. It would help in finding the right replacement
