I think I'm too much of a fuddy-duddy to get revved-up about any of these uber-modded 10/22s, but the same things pop into my head every time I see one of Hoyt's photos;

1. I need a job where he works :)
2. MAN does Hoyt over-trust the grip his bipod has on a cedar 2x6 :)

Nicely done Hoyt, you're clearly possessed! Now, put a 16" barrel/muzzle brake (in satin finish) into a nice walnut stock and slap a compact scope on it and you'll have my full attention. :)

But... I don't want one of those... I have owned many over the years... elegant and "boring!" :D

That is the most riced out 22 I have ever seen........An I thought AR15's were going overboard.

What kinda cash did that set you back?

Non-restricted?

As said above... the stock is 27", so the barrel can be any length... In this case the barrels are 10.5" and have the 2" muzzle brakes attached.

#1... No such thing as "overboard!" :D

#2... I can't (won't) answer that question in black and white!

Range Report

Ok... for a preliminary range report;

The first session was not without problems. We did a complete strip down, JB'd the barrels, cleaned and dri-lubed the bolt and receiver and started to shoot. Our standard loads are CCI SV and MMHP's... BOTH were a NO GO... they would not chamber and we had 100% FTF... so obviously these custom barrels were not chambered with the sporter chamber we requested... OH WELL, no problem; Dlask's match chamber is tighter but accurate... BUT, now we had to find a load that would cycle and function with respectable accuracy... we had a dozen different loads with us to try out... Winchester 555's chambered well and fired without any problem's, accuracy was so-so; 1 - 1.5" @ 50 yards. Winchester Super-X Power Points 37 grain HP's and 40 grain solids chambered and fired without failure, accuracy was terrible, 2-3" @ 50 yards. Winchester Wildcat were problematic with lots of FTF and FTE, and horrible accuracy to boot, 4"+ @ 50 yards. Federal 510 and 711B chambered very well and fired without any FTE or FTF... accuracy on the 510 was in the 1" range... the 711B was accurate to around 3/4" @ 50 yards... now we were getting somewhere. As I said, the CCI loads were a bust, but on a hunch I loaded one mag with bulk Blazer to try it... snapped back the bolt and it chambered perfectly, proceeded to fire ten rounds through one ragged hole! We proceeded to run through 300 rounds of Blazer, with a few groups of 555 and 711B in between, to confirm that we were on the right track... Sure enough Blazer was doing the trick... every group of the 555 and 711B opened up from the standard Blazer group. The Blazer groups were all under an 3/4 inch... most between .300" and .500"... until we do more tuning and ammo testing we'll stick with the Blazer.

Winchester 555 typical group around 1" @ 50 yards (white bullseye is .600");

CCI bulk BLAZER typical group around .400" @ 50 yards (again, white bullseye is .600");

Very nice Hoytcanon!

How do you like the glass & what did it run you?

We love the Hawke Varmint SF scopes... these 4-16X44mm models are great to 50-75 yards... on our .17 HMR's and HM2's where we shoot alot beyond 100 yards we have the 6-24X44mm models... the 1/2 Mil-Dot reticle is fantastic for rimfire applications. Depending on the model and vendor they will cost between $180 and $230.

Hoyt knows how to make a masterpiece, and judging by his posts at Rimfire central knows a hell of a lot about this little calibre!

I'm considering going 6-24x Varmint SF.

2 Questions if I may:

1. What "reticle" do you select when using the Hawke BRC software for? Is it the 10x 1/2 Mildot?
2. Where would you recommend purchasing the Durasight rings?

I'd really like the Sidewinder Tactical (8.5-25x), but I'm not sure I can justify the extra $250 for the illuminated hollow rectical and the 20x 1/2 Mildot. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

The Varmint only comes with one reticle (unless they have come out with something new that I am not aware of)... the standard non-illuminated 1/2 Mil-Dot... no fear because it is an excellent reticle... it is fine (thin) for a mil-dot reticle (not in comparison to a true fine target crosshair though)... what I really like are the hash marks betwenn dots, which allows us to count up and down for hold over and hold under and still have a dedicated aiming point. D&L carries the Hawke scopes, but they seem to be out-of-stock alot... my LGS carries them also. Dura Sight rings... well, I picked up a dozen sets on a trip to Florida... do you know anyone in the USA? I don't think they have a Canadian retailer... but we do really like the Z2 allow rings... lighter than steel, stronger than aluminum.

Gotcha on the Durasights... I'll see what I can swing.

You're advice carries a lot of weight with me (sure steered me right on the trigger job :D) so I'm sold on the Varmint... I understand it only comes with one reticle (a good one too).

My 1st question was more about Hawke's BRC software to calculate distance for the different hash / dot marks on the reticle. As part of the software settings you have to select which reticle you are calculating for... and the Varmint's reticle is not specified in the available reticles list. I was wondering if you've used that software for calculating the hash marks for your Varmints and if so which reticle did you select in the software to do so?

Although maybe you're using a different software altogether for the purpose.

Either way, thanks for feedback it is much appreciated! I might bend your ear in a couple of months on getting a QUE job on my bolt... :D

By the by, who's your local gun store?
