Hi Guys,

I know precisely 0 about airguns, i know the cheap ones at Crappy tire are probably not sufficient or humane for pest control. I have my PAL and would love to just blast them with a .22 but that would be neither legal nor prudent.

Suggestions welcome! I would prefer to use iron sights if that helps.

POWER! is the key here i am thinking.

Ditto for coons. What I wouldn't give for a .38 caliber repeating air pistol shooting 148gr hollowbase wadcutters at 495 fps....

The Three S's !
Shoot , Shovel and STFU.
The TF is tongue in cheek for effect.
The Crappy Tire air rifle will take care of most of those tree rats in the trees of your back yard, assuming your not living in a condo complex...
Head shots will drop them ok.
But, the City has a bylaw about the discharge of single projectiles and they would frown upon you shooting these pests...
So Remember the SSStfu and ....
Tight Groups,
Rob

I have to remind myself to show you one I have built to remove pests. Dead accurate, completely silent, and pretty lethal..

More power = more noise. Spring piston guns are generally the most quiet. I'd suggest anything from Weihrauch and they have very nice open sights as well. Don't go overboard on the power. What distances will you be shooting at?

I hate PDf, might as well be written in crayon as you can't copy and paste.

It's not pretty, but here's the squirrel season info:

If your budget permits, get a precharged pneumatic 22 cal air rifle. It requires either a hand pump or a scuba tank to fill. You get 30-80 shots to a fill, and can shoot a heavy lead 22 cal pellet at 800 or more feet per second. Budget on a minimum of around $400 for the gun plus either a pump or scuba tank and adapter.

Why is everybody quoting Ontario regs when the OP is in Vancouver?

The Eastern Grey is an alien species there.

Blast away OP.

The regs are here. you don't even need a hunting license:

http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/van-island/wildweb/pdf/Squirrel_FAQ_10_July_09.pdf

ii. Hunting

A permit or Provincial hunting license is not required to hunt/kill Eastern Grey Squirrels

You must follow all applicable federal, provincial, and municipal regulations restricting and controlling the use of firearms, hunting and trapping methods

Federal Firearms Licensing for the possession and use of firearms apply

0.22 caliber single projectile firearm with long rifle bird shot can be used in shotgun areas only

Contact your Municipal Bylaw Officer for further information on discharge of firearms within local government areas

I have a Dianna model 34 that does very well during the season, if i don't feel like taking a .22 LR.

In your area though, just make sure your city does not have a discharge bylaw that includes air rifles and you should still be fine with the <500 fps ones at CT in your back yard.

Personally, my experience with .177 has been less than stellar. I'd suggest if you're going to do it, go .22 air rifle for the extra knock down power. Might make that longer shot a kill shot! :D

Here in Manitoba ,those red bast$%#$ are classified as fur bearing ,so you need a trapping license.......me......I blast `em anyway or use a rat trap baited with peanut butter....SNAP...done !!!

My Webley Alecto .22 cal pistol does them fine,as well as rabbits and crows if they are close enough ,and these days they are ,as they are hanging around the lawns during this heat wave.

The crows and East.Cottontails are as bad as locusts around these parts. The rabbits should die off ,but those flying black feathered rats are getting worse and worse ,and the song birds are taking the hit !

If you can't use a .22 where you live you likely can't use a pellet gun either.

That said.. try some CB shorts, not shorts, CB shorts. They are quieter than any pellet gun I've used......... ;)

Most cities around the lower mainland have bylaws prohibiting discharge of air guns, pellet or bbs. Depending where in Vancouver you are, or how cool your neighbours are, you may or may not have problems with bylaw officers.
