Need an airgun for squirrels and crows. reasonably priced... your suggestions?

If the airgun discharges less than 500fps, it is not a firearm in the eyes of the firearms act, but what about city bylaws? Can you legally go after pests with air guns that shoot less than 500fps? Assuming its either on your property or a property you have permission to shoot on.

The city bylaws state to contact an exterminator, but if you go after the pests yourself, shooting less than 500fps, are you breaking any laws?

An airgun that shoots under 500fps is still a firearm BUT is exempt from certain clauses of the criminal code. Mostly, registration, storage etc.

Most by-laws are written to include airguns and cross bows specifically in the no-discharge laws.

gamo

I have the Gamo Hunter. I shoot crows in my yard quite regularly. It is rated at 1000/1200f.p.s. It does an adequate job of dispatching pests quickly

I would go with a .22 cal airgun. Accuracy is more important than speed. If these buggers get in your attic they will wreak havock. Shoot first worry about the internet C.O.'s later.

Know of a good semi-auto air rifle, prefer.22 or.17, rated for around 900 to 1000 fps, not expensive? I was considering the Crosman M4 .177 4.5mm and getting it tuned, but would like something closer to preference out of the box. Will be a varmint/plinking/training gun.

Semi auto air rifles are pretty rare. I'm sure someone can come up with an example of one, but I haven't seen any (edit Berretta Cx-4,, Crosman RepeatAir 1077). Repeaters that require cocking are fairly common, but not semi auto. That M4 requires pumping for each shot.

Ive heard very good things about the cossman 1377 in .177. Supposedly they are dead accuarate and will kill up to 30m.

I have never shot one this is just in online reveiws that i have read. If anyone has experience with it that would be great as i am going to buy for squirrels, crows, magpies and all those little pests.

You're not likely to get semi-auto and not expensive in an air rifle. The closest to this would be the Hammerli Pneuma, still on sale at Air Gun Source. It's a ten-shot repeater in .22, but will require a manual pump or scuba tank to recharge.

Un-tuned, it's accurate but loud (think .22 short). You can expect 25 or so consistent shots before needing a re-fill. Tuning it can quiet it a little bit and stretch out the consistent shot count to 30 or 40, depending on velocity.

This gun is made for Hammerli by Hatsan, who also make the gun available in .177, .22 and .25, in single shot and in ten-shot repeaters in bolt, side lever, and pump action. You can get wood or synthetic stock, long or short barrel (regular or Walther), longer air cylinder, and a 490fps valve version.

The .177 is over 1000fps, quieter than the .22, and can get well over 100 shots on a charge. Available here.

I like my Hatsan AT1022 which is like the Hammerli Pneuma shown above. It will shoot in the 900's with lead pellets. Has some pretty good smack at 50 yards, but wind really blows pellets around outdoors at 50 yards and beyond.

gamo hunter

Where did you pick it up?

I ordered it up thru SIR (which is now the Cabelas in Winnipeg). They have some newer models tho. I would go to the Gamo website and see which model you like and check the online catalog's from there.

The only thing I would recommend is stay with something that has at least 1000 fps

I bought the Stoeger X20 with scope at the beginning of the summer and have had no problems taking out squirrels and crows. For squirrels I use the crosman pointed pellets, they are nice and accurate in this gun, and for crows I use the gold gamo raptors.

The Three S's !
Shoot , Shovel and STFU.
The TF is tongue in cheek for effect.
The Crappy Tire air rifle will take care of most of those tree rats in the trees of your back yard, assuming your not living in a condo complex...
Head shots will drop them ok.
But, the City has a bylaw about the discharge of single projectiles and they would frown upon you shooting these pests...
So Remember the SSStfu and ....
Tight Groups,
Rob

"Shoot , Shovel and STFU"

Bloody hell that's funny! And, good advice!

My Crossman 1088 air pistol (.177, six shot) from Chinese Tire works just fine at close range. ;)

Of course, the Savage MKII above it using .22 'CB' shorts at 720 fps is even better! (of course, not in the City)

I have a Slavia 631 that I bought at Home Depot a long time ago. It's just under 500 fps and works decently on small pests. Anything pigeon size or smaller would be fine. Although shot placement will be key. It's a spring gun and open sights. So far it's done it's job very well.

If they are a pest like i have here in PG and we cant shoot at them ..do what i have done...make a set box just like the trappers do to just fit a rat trap ...1 inch taller then the spring arc..twice as deep as the trap ...bait trap with peanut butter ... they can resist ...the box makes them stretch right out and reach in to get the bait and its a clean kill every time ,and the neighbors who are feeding the gnawing little bastards are none the wiser ...
just my 2 cents:D
