Hi All,
Other than the standard paper targets at an outdoor range. What other types of targets would any of you suggest that would be more challenging or more fun to shoot at.
What are some do's and don'ts when it comes to targets at an outdoor range.

Thanks

Each range has different rules. ask at the one you go to. We are able to shoot metal reactive targets from 50 yards out at mine. and steel gongs at 200 yards. Many shoot different things too like soda cans and plastic bottles, ping pong balls and golf balls. but they have to clean them up after.

we use orange chubbies (small plastic pop bottles, full of course) from walmart, Kids absolutely love them. some simply spray a little, some just splash a little, some single spout, some double spout and some flat out explode. Its great anticipation waiting to see what the next one will do. Kids love it. they make an aweful mess which is always washed away by the rain when ever it comes. the obvious cheap ones you don't have to clean up are clay pigeons, and you can now get small ones, around 2 inches in diameter. The small pieces are usually used by the next guy that shows up at the range.

I usually throw an old ceramic dinner plate on the hillside and shoot at it.. then the subsequent pieces until there's no pieces left - the pieces jump around quite a bit - the more the target responds when I hit it, the bigger the grin on my face :)

If your range will allow it, try the orange rubber "self healing" targets. Just be careful you're not shooting into the range floor at an angle that will pop lead over the backstop... (shooting from prone or kneeling)

Metallic silhouette is fun standing, triple the distances and shoot from the bench is good stuff.

Paintballs on golf-tees at 100yds is fun from the bench.

x2 on sidewalk chalk being a cool idea! N'er thought of it, n'er seen it, but love the notion!

Depends where you shoot, and what you're shooting.
-Clays at 100 are fun (I don't go to a range, and am comfy they will degrade)
-Paintballs on snow are fun
-Balloons waaaaaay out are fun
-Making a golfball dance can be fun too

I'm working on a shooting tree that will reset itself. You'll know if you've hit it, and can keep on shooting it.

Honestly, if I'm "fine tuning" a .22, I do like paper. Not reactionary, but can allow for some analysis afterward.

Chalk, golf balls or if you have some metalworking skills these are a hoot. 1/4" material with two welded together at the notch.

I use all the scrap paper from botched print jobs, and print my targets on the other side.
There are lots of target pdfs on the internet, so why buy them?

Haven't tried it with my rimfires, but with my air rifle I used to shoot at cheap paintballs or Tums tablets standing up in a groove on top of a 2x4. this was at a private cottage. Biodegradeable, but as others have said - check range rules.

Lots of fun but- CLEAN up after yourself. Its a pain to see plastic, cans,or glass at any shooting area.

Yeah, I often bring lots of plastic crap outdoors to shoot at, don't let anyone around here recycle anything until I determine it's not some sort of plastic receptacle with lid - I fill em all with water and watch them through my scope go BOOM!
bottle of tide, or coke, or those chocolate covered almonds from costco, vinegar, etc.
For that matter, take your shotgun out with a few of those and it'll make all your little problems go away ;)
(bring rain cape for the latter)

EDIT: Just remembered we were talking rimfire.. oops  )

The range I go to doesn`t allow steel targets or cans or plastic bottles. Personally I find it boring to just shoot paper targets. I hang tennis balls with fishing line from my target stand also I cut 4x4s into about 5 inch lengths gives you a moving target as it gets swinging when you hit it . gets more challenging as the block gets smaller from splintering when you hit it. I would use steel reactive if they were allowed. Maybe I will try some of the plastic self healing targets you can buy. That would get expensive after paying shipping and taxes border fees seems to about double the price.
