Going to try popping a deer this fall with the new Mosin rifle that i just picked up. I notice a big range in the grain weight for hunting rounds in 7.62X54R.
can anyone give some advice on best grain weight round out of these rifles/ (100-150yd shot max).

thanks,

Dave

I sighted in to use S and B 180 gr soft point...Haven't shot anything other than paper with it yet.

There are a number of .311/.312 hunting bullets in the 150-180gr range. For 100-150 yds I'd go with a 174gr Hornady RN or a Speer 180gr RN. I've shot a lot of game, incl deer, bear, and moose, with these in a Lee- Enfield. If your rifle is accurate with .308 bullets, and some are, then the sky is the limit.

If you are buying commercial ammo, any 150-180gr soft point cup and core bullet will work fine on deer. Try a couple of brands/weights to see what your rifle likes and go with it.

With this chambering, it'll be the one you n' your rifle shoot best....any commercially available SP will knock down a white tail.

Really sorry to have to mention this, but the Army sighted these rifles in for their 1908 loading.

This used a 149-grain Minie-type hollowbase FMJ bullet.

Kicks less, too.
.

Looks like the 150grain hunting load is the most popular, as it's sold out everywhere I check. I'm seeing 180 - 204 grain stuff on the shelves.
NB - Accuracy Plus in Peterborough just updated their used gun list - they have a Mosin sniper with scope just listed, for $599, in case anyone was interested.

yeah i did read that when i was researching what to use... I looked for a 150 gr soft point but couldn't find any locally. I did have to adjust elevation accordingly for the 180 gr bullet
